Free Pattern: Wreath Applique or Ornament

This little wreath (about 3" across) is perfect for decorating a hat, or for a quick handmade ornament for the Christmas tree!  I just decorated with red, finishing with a bow,  but you could alternately crochet beads right in, or sew them on after you're finished.

It's shown below on a Vertical Stripes Beanie.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn, green (I used Loops and Threads Impeccable)
Size 5mm hook
Tapestry Needle

Abbreviatons:
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch

Instructions:
Round 1: Make a magic ring.  Inside ring, ch 1, 10 sc.  Pull it until the scs touch, but don't pull the hole closed!  Join with a sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 3.  In same st, 3 dc.  4 dc in each sc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  Finish off.  Weave in ends.

If the wreath is having trouble staying flat, pinch it in a few places to get it to ruffle instead of bend.

I took a piece of red yarn and wove it in and out of the scs, then tied a bow.

If you'd like to make it an ornament, tie or glue a loop of yarn on the back for hanging.

  1. very cute!! I grew up with a few of these on my tree so it brings back memories! I just made the vertical stripes beanie last night and it's great! My lines aren't as perfect as yours though - They are more pronounced on one side of the fpdc than the other and I'm not sure why. It still looks great though - thanks for the pattern!
