Free Pattern: Earflap Hat - Youth/Adult Small

This hat should fit older kids/teens and small adult heads.  This fits my small head perfectly in the youth size!  If the older kid or teen has a smaller head, hop down to the toddler size and add a 13th row if you need it.


Supplies:
5mm hook
Worsted weight yarn (I used cotton)
Opt tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Sc dec – single crochet decrease

Special instructions:
Sc dec – Pull up a loop in each stitch indicated, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.



Instructions: (ch-3 does not count as dc)  (I changed colors every round.)
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3, dc 10, pull ring tight, join to top ch of ch 3
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc each dc around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, repeat from * around.  Join to top ch of ch 3.  (40)
Round 5: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc,  dc in next 3 dc, repeat from * around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. (50 dc)
Round 6: Ch 3.  Dc around.  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 7: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 4 dc, repeat from * around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. (60 dc)
Round 8: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 11 dc, repeat from * around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. (65 dc)
Round 9-(13 youth) (14 adult small): Ch 3, dc in each dc around.  Join to top ch of ch 3. Do not finish off.

First Earflap:
Ch 1
Row 1: sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 8 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 6 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 4 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.  Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc 6, ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 2 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.  Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over first two sc, sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Sc dec over two sc.   Finish off.

Second Earflap:
Join yarn to approx. the 16th stitch from the side opposite side of the joining chs. Ch 1.
Row 1: Going away from the joining chs, sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 8 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 6 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 4 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.  Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc 6, ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc.  Sc next 2 sc.  Sc dec over last two sc.  Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over first two sc, sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Sc dec over two sc.  Do not finish off.

Finishing:
Sc around, with two sc in the point of each earflap.  Finish off, weave in ends.

Braided Strings:
Cut 6 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take 3 pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of two strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is desired length, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.
