Free Pattern: Magnetic Pen Holder

This is intended to keep a pen on the fridge, or other magnetic surface, so that it doesn't run away, like my pens always seem to do.  The stars hold the pen up out of the reach of little mischievous hands!

Small amount of medium or light weight yarn
Hook appropriate for your yarn (I used Red Heart medium weight yarn and a size 5 (H/8) hook)
Magnet strong enough to hold a pen
Hot glue

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hcd – half double crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Ch 10
Row 1: Pull up a loop in the second ch from the hook and in the next four chs. YO, pull through all 6 loops on hook, ch 1 to complete the first star. Pull up a loop in the center of the first star, in the last ch used in the first star, and in the next three chs. YO, pull through all 6 loops on hook. Ch 1 to complete the second star. In final ch, hdc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: Three hdc in the center of each star. In the final space, hdc. (7 hdc) Ch 1, turn sideways.
2 Row 1: Along the side of the piece, sc 4 times. Ch 1, turn.
2 Row 2: Sc in each sc across (4 sc)
2 Row 3: Repeat 2 Row 2.
2 Row 4: Fold over. (Looks like a pocket) Slip stitch through both ends across 4 st, ch 1.
Pen chain: Sl st through the corner of both sides, ch 50 (or as many as it takes to get to the length you want for the cord on the pen, plus 5.) Sl st in the fifth ch from the hook, finish off. Weave in ends.

Finishing: Hot glue magnet to the sc side of the pocket.

Pull a loop of chain through the little loop on the end,

put the pen through the loop,

and pull tight.
Stick the pen through the two star holes (as pictured at the beginning of the post). Works best with a straight stick pen with a clip.

Modification: Sew sc side of completed pattern onto a large fridgie (find patterns here) with a strong magnet on the back of it.
