Free Pattern: No-sew Rose, Large

This is a larger version of the original no-sew rose.  Created with a flat circle for a base, it's more streamlined than the prevailing rolling method, easier to use as an embellishment.  This flower would work well on an adult-sized hat, or as an over-sized flower on a baby hat.  I used the closed version on the newborn size Open Stitch Newborn Hat.  Pictured below, I used the open version in my non-slip hairclip tutorial.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (Pictured is I Love This Cotton by Hobby Lobby)
Appropriate size hook (Used 5 mm)
Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch

Instructions:
Instructions are for closed rose (pictured top).  Changes for open rose (pictured above) are in parentheses.
Round 1: Magic ring, inside ring ch 1, 10 sc.  Pull ring tight, join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 3.  2 dc in back (front) loops only in each sc around.  [18 dc]  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 1.  In back (front) loops only, 1 sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc.  Repeat around.  [27 sc]  Join to ch.

Rose Spiral: ch 1.  (turn so wrong side is facing.  The back of your work will be facing you the whole time.)  *In front loop of third sc from hook, 8 dc.  Skip two sc, sl st in front loop of next sc.  Repeat from * 3 times.  Skip two sc, 8 dc in front loop (this is the last one.  If you don't have three scs left, go into either the loop or the second sc on this row).

Next you will crochet in the exposed loops from round 2's dcs.  Sl st into the second dc.  *In second dc from hook, 6 dc.  Skip one dc, sl st.  Repeat from * 3 times. Now you will move to the next "round."  In front loop of second dc from hook, which should be the last dc, 6 dc.   Skipping one dc, sl st in the post of the next dc.

*Skip one dc post, 6 dc in post of next dc.  Skip one dc post, sl st in post of next dc.  Repeat from * one time.   Skip one dc post, 6 dc in post of next dc.

You should be ready to move to the next "round," the exposed loops of the Round 1 scs.  Sl st in first loop.

*Skip one loop, 4 dc in next loop.  Skip one loop, sl st in next loop.  Repeat from * one time.  If you have the space--in one test rose I did, in one I did not.  Don't know how that happened, but they both turned out nice--repeat a second time.  You do not have to have the space to sl st for the last petal.  Finish off with a long tail for sewing.

Thread tapestry needle through tail on end, insert through center of rose.  Pull tight enough to make the last petal curl in nicely.  Weave in so it doesn't move.

  3. Hi Alli

I love your site and have made loads of your patterns. They are really good and pretty accurate. I'm busy making this no sew rose and I think you've made a typing error. It's in the paragraph starting Rose Spiral: ch 1 ... You say to repeat the 8 dc in 3rd sc from hook 2 times after having done it once. This will give me 4 petals once I do the last one and a whole lot of left over sc? I think you meant repeat 3 times to end with a total of 5 petals.

  4. Hey Alli can you please explain this to me i am so confused. " Next you will crochet in the exposed loops from round 2's dcs. Sl st into the second dc. *In second dc from hook, 6 dc. Skip one dc, sl st. Repeat from * 3 times. Now you will move to the next "round." In front loop of second dc from hook, which should be the last dc, 6 dc. Skipping one dc, sl st in the post of the next dc."

    Thanks

  5. The flower pattern states Ch 1. In back (front) loops only, 1 sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc. Repeat around. [27 sc] Join to ch.

Does this mean that I alternative between front and back loops?

    1. If you want to do the closed flower, then you work in the back loops. If you want to do the open flower, then you work in the front loops.

  7. Is it an error right at the start or do I count wrong? 10sc into each of which I put 2 dc = 18dc?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Not an error. At the end of round 1 it says to join with sl st to the first sc. If you do that, you are left with 9 sc. 2 in each of those is 18.

  9. Hello! First of all, thank you so much for this free pattern! It is beautiful!

I was hesitant to even ask because I've made this a few times and it has come out just fine. So I wonder if I even need to know the answer, but it is bugging me. LOL.

Here: "Next you will crochet in the exposed loops from round 2's dcs.

What do you mean by "post" at the end of this paragraph (and into the following paragraph)? I must be missing something or doing something wrong. Still not sure it matters, but would love to know if I need to adjust what I'm doing. :) Thanks!!

    1. In the picture just below the instruction you quoted, I have my hook stuck in the post. If you click on the picture, you can see it much bigger. I just use whichever of the loops in the middle of the dc that's easiest for me to get my hook through. You could go all the way around the post, or like me you could just use one of the loops in the center. Hope that helps!

  13. Ahhhh!!! I Love this flower and I REALLY want to learn how to make it. And it was very clearly explained (at least for my brain!) until I get to the part above the first picture stating to "crochet in the exposed loops from round 2's dcs". What does exposed loops mean??? I tried zooming in on the pic and that didn't help. Please help me!!! ;)
By the way- thank you so much for posting all these lovely patterns!! You are quite the artist!! :)

  14. So I ended up just winging it- and it turned out pretty cute. Probably not as nice as this, but cute anyway!! :)
Thanks again for sharing your patterns.

  15. So for the open rose you aren't supposed to turn so the wrong side is facing. When I do that it turns into the closed rose. You are supposed to work in the loops behind, with the right side facing.

  16. I made one of these flowers and sewed it to a beanie. It is so adorable!! At the bottom of the beanie, I did a little scalloped edge which made the hat even cuter! Thank you so much for writing this pattern!

  17. Hi, Thank you very much for the pattern, but the pattern for open rose seems to be for a close one. Can you tell me how you make the open rose?

    1. If it's working out opposite for you, then use the other pattern. So if you want to make the open one, use the instructions for the closed one. Hope it works out! Alli
