When I do that it turns into the closed rose. You are supposed to work in the loops behind, with the right side facing. If you click on the picture, you can see it much bigger. I just use whichever of the loops in the middle of the dc that's easiest for me to get my hook through. You could go all the way around the post, or like me you could just use one of the loops in the center.
