A sweet, girlie hat for a newborn. It would be great for spring. (Baby doll pictured has a head circumference of 14")
Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Cotton)
Size 5mm (H/8) hook
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet
Instructions:
(ch-3 does not count as dc)
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3. 10 dc inside of ring. Pull ring tight. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dcs. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. (40 dc)
Rounds 5-6: Ch 3. Dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. (40 dc)
Rounds 7-9: Ch 3. Dc in first 10 dc. Ch 9. Skip 9 dc, dc in the 10th. Dc in each remaining dc around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 10: Ch 3. Dc in first 10 dc. Ch 4. Sc around all chs into 5th skipped dc on Round 6 (see photos below).
Ch 4. Skip 4 dcs, dc in each remaining dc around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. Finish off, weave in ends.

ReplyDeleteHey Alli, I'm a nurse in a NICU and have recently started making hats from your pretty patterns to donate to the unit. I know your cluster hat pattern has a preemie option, but are there easy ways to adapt the other hats for our little preemies (including this pattern)?
ReplyDeleteStephanie, I will add the premie sizes to the sizes I want to add to my existing patterns! But an easy way to adjust the size smaller is to increase less. So, for example, in round 4 of this pattern, instead of (2 dc in first dc, dc in next 2 dc) you could (2 dc in first dc, dc in next 5 dc), which would make a much smaller hat. ReplyDeleteyou can increase more for a bigger baby, and add rows (such as in row4 only more crochets between 2 double crochets,) thats how I did it for my 4yr old!!!

ReplyDeleteClick on the words "magic ring" and the blog post will explain how to use the magic ring technique. You make all the stitches for the first round inside the ring, then join after you pull it tight. If you'd rather, you can ch 2 and join, then make the 3 chs and 10 dcs inside that ring.

ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to attempt this for my first baby! I'm great at crocheting scarves (they're straight!), and think I understand the concept of the Magic Ring. Just a little confused about terminology. When you say "ch 3. 10 dc inside of ring", does that mean make the Magic Ring according to June's instructions (the link) as so: Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring, then add your stitches? Or are we to replace the 6 sc with your ch 3, 10 dc? This is probably obvious to experienced crocheters! The phrase "inside the ring" is throwing me off/making me overthink it :)

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this pattern too, I love how the 3 ch at the beginning of each round has made such a lovely straight line, not really that noticeable at all. I hate it in hat patterns where all you can see is this swirly line thru the hat and it just makes it look terrible. I have made quite a few of your hats, this particular one is the first time I have made it and it turned out divine, thanks for sharing such great patterns :)
