Free Pattern: Butterfly Hat - Premie

3-month size here.
Newborn size here.

Sweet butterfly hat for a tiny tiny baby.  Baby doll pictured has head circumference of 12".


Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used acrylic)
Size 5mm (H/8) hook

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet



Instructions:  (ch-3 does not count as dc)
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3. 10 dc inside of ring.  Pull ring tight.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3.  2 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dcs.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 5: Ch 3.  Dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Rounds 6-7: Ch 3.  Dc in first 8 dc.  Ch 9.  Skip 9 dc, dc in the 10th.  Dc in each remaining dc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 8: Ch 3.  Dc in first 8 dc.  Ch 4.  Sc around all chs into 5th skipped dc on Round 5 (see photos below).




Ch 4.  Skip 4 dcs, dc in each remaining dc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  Finish off, weave in ends.

  4. A bit confused. At the beginning of the pattern it says the ch 3 does not count as a stitch but then it's treated as a stitch throughout the pattern and if you disregard it as a stitch and then do another 10 DC's then your repeat doesn't come out evenly in round 4. Is the ch 3 counted or not counted? Thanks!

  5. Hi I do not know how to read patterns, but I decided to try this one. I got confused by a couple of things: why not center the joints in the back instead of off center and I ended with 9 rows to be able to have 4 chains in th front. Any help please?

  6. Because the seam up the back makes more sense in the center of the head, and the butterly should be off to the side when worn, not in the center of the forehead. That's all. You are free to do it however you prefer. ;)
