Free Pattern: Newborn Booties Worsted Weight Yarn
I couldn't find a free Mary Jane style baby bootie pattern using worsted weight yarn, so I started with this sport weight pattern from free-crochet.com and changed it all up to work for worsted weight yarn. I made mine for a nursery decoration, so I haven't tried them on newborn baby #3, but they look about the same size as the size N shoes we have.
Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used acrylic)
Size 5mm (H) hook
Opt tapestry needle
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Hdc - half double crochet
Hdc2tog - 2 half double crochets together (see special stitches)
YO - yarn over
Special Stitch:
Hdc2tog - Make a half double crochet within one step of completion (3 loops on hook). In next st, make a second hdc within one step of completion (now 5 loops on hook). YO, Pull through all 5 loops on hook.
Instructions (make 2):
Ch 7
Round 1 - Sc in second ch from hook. Sc in next 4 st. 5 sc in last sc. On other side, sc in next 4 st. 2 sc in last st. Join to ch.
Round 2 - Ch 1, Sc in next 5 sc. 2 sc in next 5 sc. Sc in next 5 sc. 2 sc in last 2 sc. Join to ch.
Round 3 - Ch 1. Sc in next 9 sc. 2 sc in next 3 sc. Sc in next 9 sc. 2 sc in last 3 sc. Join to ch.
Round 4-5 - Ch 2. Hdc in each sc around. (I did Round 4 in back loops only, to make a nice edge on the sole.) Join to top ch of ch 2.
Round 6 - Ch 1. Sc in first 6 hdc. Hdc2tog in next 12 st (6 hdc2tog). Sc in next 11 hdc. Join to ch.
Round 7 - Ch 1. Sc in first 6 sc. Hdc2tog in next 8 st (4 hdc2tog). Sc in last 10 sc. Join to ch. Don't finish off.
Strap - Sl st over 4 scs. Ch 6. Attach to the other side with a sl st. Finish off, weave in ends.

ReplyDeleteI've had good luck with crochetpatterncentral.com and ravelry for some of my baby shoes and boots, for free :) Good job on figuring out how to do it yourself....Wow! thats talent :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the new baby, Alli!
ReplyDeleteI really like all your patterns - how do I subscribe to your blog?
ReplyDeleteGreat job with your patterns. Not only are they beautiful, but they seem to be easy to follow. I found another pattern similar to these booties ( Mary Jane) but the instructions were very poor!! Tried but to no avail.
ReplyDeleteI love this site .I crochet for new norms at our Pregnancy Problem Center. there are so many nice patterns
ReplyDeleteGorgeous booties - and I really love the colour :)
ReplyDeleteThis is probably a dumb question, but could you please be more specific and tell me which chain am I suppose to join with. Is it the chain 1 from the beginning of the row?
ReplyDeletehello Alli, nice to meet this site. Thanks for your pattern. I have found that I need for my project\
ReplyDeleteThanks very much
The shoes look good, I like, very suitable for children to wear,
ReplyDeleteNice pattern. I make pretty tight stitches so I used this pattern with an H hook to make preemie size booties. I also did hdc in back loops only for round 4 to get a more defined sole. Turned out great.
ReplyDeleteHi Alli, my stitch count isnt coming out right! At the beginning of each round, after you chain 1, do you start the next stitches in the same st as the ch 1.... Or do you start in the next st? Please help! Thank you so much!
