Free Pattern: Soccer Ball

This is a small soccer ball, about 3" across.  I decided not to do the official hexagon-pentagon soccer ball pattern so that I could finish faster.  (But it would be super easy to use this pattern to make the hex-pent ball, just do 6 sc in the first round for the hexagons and follow the pattern from there, with the additional stitches in each round.  Make 20 hexagons and 12 pentagons. Surround the pentagons with hexagons.  It will turn out bigger.)

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn, at least 2 colors.
Size 4.25mm hook
Stitch marker
Tapestry needle for sewing
Polyfill or fabric (and opt. sock) to stuff ball

Abbreviation:
Sc - single crochet

Pentagons:  (do not join rounds)
Round 1: In Magic Ring, 5 sc.  Pull tight.
Round 2: 2 sc in each sc.  (10 sc)
Round 3: *3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc.  Repeat from * around.  (40 sc)  Finish off.  Weave in ends.

Make 12 pentagons (6 of each color)

Using additional yarn, sew them together from the center of the group of 3 scs to the first of the next group of 3.  (I used two strands together so that the seam would show up.)

Sew 5 pentagons around the middle pentagon, then tie additional yarn to the seam with a knot (shown) and sew down the sides of the same-colored pentagons.

Then sew the two sides together.  Before you sew the last of it closed, stuff with polyfill or fabric.  (I stuffed a sock with polyfill and stuffed the ball with that.)

Finish sewing and hide your knot, then weave in any remaining ends.
