ReplyDeleteThis is so cute! And i have just found your other free patterns too, they're gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteDid you mean the 6 month pattern fits your little girl? I'm looking for a pattern for an earflap hat to fit a baby with a 19" head. I made your baby earflap hat and absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteThe toddler size, the size of this pattern on this page, pictured above, fits my 3 year old.
ReplyDeleteI made this for my 3 year old and it was so big it fits me. I had to make another one in a smaller size with a smaller hook, maybe hints like that in your patterns might be useful to others?
DeleteOkay, thanks very much!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
ReplyDeleteYour patterns are the best I have used so far. I want to make an earflap hat for my husband...is there an easy way to adjust the pattern to adult size?
ReplyDeleteLook under the picture and there are listings for different sizes. Click where is says here and it changes to the size you want.
DeleteHello Alli!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pattern! Just made earflaps... So easy and nice!
Olga ☼
Kendra, after row 8, add another increase row (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5), then if it still needs to be bigger, do a dc around and another increase row (2 dc in next dc, dc in next 6) and add a few more rows after 13. You may need to make the earflaps bigger... start with 14 instead of 12 and follow the pattern (for the top dec either side then sc across in the next row, then dec either side on every row for the last few) down.
ReplyDeleteHi Alli!
ReplyDeletei love love love this pattern! I am just starting to learn to crochet hats, and I find your pattern very simple to follow, except for one thing. At the beginning of every row, i have to chain 3, and i do this....but everytime i do this i eventually end up with a bunch of holes in my hat... it's looking very strange... can you give me any advice?
If you start your round in the same stitch as your ch3, it will minimize the appearance of the seam =)
DeleteIf you chain 2 instead of 3, it helps minimize the seam.
Deletethis is a great pattern and i appreciate you posting it! i've made this pattern and felt my gaps were too noticeable. a search brought me to these same two tips and with those alterations, the finished hat is flawless!
Deletechain 2 instead of 3 and start your round in the same stitch as ch2
Those holes are what I call the seam... There's not really a good way (in my opinion) of getting rid of it. You can minimize the appearance of the seam by making sure you chain very tightly. Also, even if you don't chain very tightly, the seam will be less noticeable when you are finished. I have been making hats with seams for years, and no one has ever commented. Even when I've asked about it, they have only been able to see it when I pointed it out. Maybe we notice the holes more because we are so aware of how different the ch-3s are from the rest of the stitches.
ReplyDeleteI am trying to make this hat for a 19'' head. Would you suggest I do the 6 month size and just add another row to make it a little bigger. I absolutely love this hat I made the newborn size and it is just adorable!
ReplyDeleteI love your patterns and instructions! I too am looking for a pattern that fits a 12 month old( 18" circumference head" I saw you had a pattern that fit your one yr old son, would u recommend following that one or like Amanda said adding an extra row on the 6 month old pattern? Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThe 12-month pattern should fit an 18" head circumference. :)
ReplyDeletethank you for this, i was looking for a toddler mohawk hat tute, and was about to give up, i'm just going to substitute a mohawk for the snowflake and pompom! thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust wondering if anyone made this in teenage/adult size yet?
ReplyDeleteI love the pattern
Love your patterns. I have made this hat in the 9-12 Month & 3 Month size for my Niece and Family friend's baby girl. I taught myself to crochet and I find these patterns very easy to follow and I can whip these up in no time. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI agree with anonymous! I have been crocheting for 10 years and have never been able to make a hat till this pattern. I'd kill for an adult sized one. I made this one in brown and put a line with laces down for a football. My next hat is going to be a monster high one with eyes and a bow for a friends daughter. Thanks for making your pattern free and easy!!!
ReplyDeleteI made this hat! :) Thanks for posting the pattern.
ReplyDeletehttp://whowantstobemarthawhenicanbeme.blogspot.com/2012/01/hats-off-to-new-year.html
I just made this hat without the earflaps. I am teaching myself how to crochet and this was my first attempt at making a hat. I used a normal plain yarn and a size H or 8 needle. The hat turned out perfect with no holes. I used the toddler pattern, however it might be a 6-9 months size, maybe even smaller. I think next time I need to use a fatter yarn and bigger needle. Thanks for the pattern!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand the magic ring, where are the 10 dc made, the ch 3 is not joined until after this??
ReplyDeleteHey Anonymous - you can watch video's for the magic ring on youtube.com or click this link to the one i found most helpful - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHYVutk2iYY&feature=relmfu
ReplyDeleteafter you make the loop, you do 10 DC into the loop, then pull it tight. once you've pulled it tight, you join with a slip stitch. once you join with a slip stitch, THEN is when you chain 3, and begin the pattern...
hope that helps.
You can chain 3 after you form the magic ring the add the 10 doubles.
DeleteI just finishes a hat (with ear flaps and everything) for my husband. It was just guess work on my part. I had a pattern for a regular hat and just followed that mostly and then added on the ear covers, etc. If you have a good hat pattern it is rather easy to put the ears covers on.
ReplyDeleteHi, is there a simple way to convert this pattern for use with chunky wool?
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can say, Chaos, is to follow the pattern until the increases equal slightly smaller than the crown of the head, then skip to the dc around rows and go until it's long enough. Then make the earflaps, but only do them about half as many stitches and half as long. Hopefully you can eyeball it. :)
ReplyDeleteDo you have a video on how to make these hats?
ReplyDeleteI don't make videos, but if you need help with the stitches, you can look up "magic ring" or "double crochet" on youtube.
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!! I have never got the hang of making a hat and I FINALLY made one for my daughter today using your pattern. I too had the issue with the seam, but I took a yarn needle and used the "tail" to fill in the gaps. You can't tell now. :) But if you don't want to do that, or it still looks off, you can always add flowers or stick it in the back. :) I planned to add flowers either way, but I don't need to use them up the entire seam now because I fixed it. :D Thank you, will be using your patterns to make gifts for family and friends and photography props for myself. :D Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI used this basic hat pattern and turned it into a Mini Mouse hat for my niece. Thanks so much!!
ReplyDeleteWhen you say worsted weight yarn, I'm wondering what thickness, because I have yarn of every thickness imaginable, and all of it says worsted on it. So, which yarn would you reccomend to use to make this hat pattern? thanks!
ReplyDeleteThis would be a medium yarn, like Red Heart Super Saver. The hook size on the package should be 5 or 5.5. There are multiple names for the same thing. Here's a good chart: http://www.craftyarncouncil.com/weight.html
ReplyDeleteHow do you make this for a child bigger than 4 years old? How would you adjust the pattern?
ReplyDeleteI made this for a toddler, and it fits my almost 9 year old. Idk how...
DeleteHead sizes are not too different at this age. This hat is really more of a toddler/young youth size. If you want to adjust it, follow the instructions for adding another increase row found in the sizing information tab at the top of the blog. :)
DeleteCheck out the Sizing Information tab at the top of the blog!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely LOVE this hat; created a monster out of it and posted the results on my blog. I also linked to this pattern, I hope that's okay! http://scrambledyarn.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your great creations!
I really love this pattern and I've been working on it all day but I can't seem to get it right no matter what. I'm so confused by the instructions when it says ch 2 dc next 2 dc next 5 or what ever it said.... ugh I still refuse to give up on this pattern and will try my luck tomorrow..... just wanted to vent to my fellow crocheters :)
ReplyDeleteThat can be frustrating... sorry you're having trouble. If you're more of a visual person, try writing it out with symbols in rows to represent the rounds. That might help. Hope it goes better for you today!
ReplyDeleteWhy don't you give us exactly the line that's causing you trouble and we'll try to hash it out for you. I didn't find any places where I had a problem with this pattern, so someone here should be able to help you with it! :)
ReplyDeleteanonymous - I used to be confused with patterns too! When a pattern says, 2dc and dc in next 3...or whatever.....
ReplyDeleteThe 2dc means to stitch 2 double crochets in one stitch, then the other part means do 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitches..hope that helps!
hello Alli, I just love your patterns for all your hats the sizes fit perfectly and Im new to Crocheting and havent found this hard at all. I was wanting to make a Toddler hat in single crochet, i thought i knew what to do but its not working at all. Do you think you could help? Thank you so much :-)
ReplyDeleteHello! I made this simple hat for my 2 year old son in a couple of hours and it's super cute! Thanks so much for the pattern :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't crocheted in years and my daughter asked if I could make this hat that she saw in a magazine. I tried to find the pattern everywhere and decided to try a search. I found your pattern. Thank you Alli for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your easy to follow pattern. I started using it to make newborn hats for charity. Many people liked the style and now I'm making them for my adult friends and family, just using a bulky yarn and altering the earflaps a little. Super fast and fun. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy your pattern but my problem is in determining where to start the earflaps. Can you please give me some indication.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much.
As stated at the end of the pattern, do not finish off, and start the earflap right there. Then at the beginning of the second earflap instructions is stated where to attach the yarn for the second earflap. All the best.
ReplyDeleteHello, I am trying to make this hat for my nephews. Actually, I am also stuck at where to start the second earflap.
ReplyDeleteI do not quit understand this sentence: Join yarn to approx. the 14th stitch from the side opposite side of the joining chs.
What do you mean with opposite site of the joining chains?
Also, I followed the toddler size, but it looks to small even for my 1 year old nephew (although I have not tested it yet). I used a size 5 hook, so I assume I have to crochet less tight, or do I have to buy ticker yarn? Or can I just try with the same yarn, but a ticket hook?
You should definitely ask for a head measurement for your one year old nephew and check it. This hat was way too big for my one year old. But you may crochet tighter. If you need to make the hat bigger, add another increase round. Check out the size information tab at the top of the blog to see how to do that.
ReplyDeleteThe "joining chains" are the ch-3s that you use to join the rounds. I just mentioned them so that you remember to put them on the back side of the hat - the two earflaps should be closer together in the back of the hat than in the front. You can just eyeball it if it's easier for you.
I know a similar question was already addressed above, but when it says to attach on the opposite side of joining chains, does that mean when you start counting to stitch 14, the first one you count comes immediately after the ch-3s, and on from there? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteYep
ReplyDeleteI think when you said three groups of four strands of yarn that was an error. You can only have six strands... should that be three groups of two strands of yarn?
ReplyDeleteYou're right. I've changed it, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI love this hat! I want to make for my 5 yr old granddaughter. How do you make the pompom?
ReplyDeleteOh I see pompom link....thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your patterns! I make hats for cancer patients and I love the variety you have!
ReplyDeleteI am in love with these. The pattern is so easy. I just taught myself to crochet a few weeks ago and it was sooo easy to follow and very simple to do. I did 2 in one day! And they are them best looking things I have done yet. I am making them for all my kids and some friends kids too. THANK YOU.
ReplyDeleteHi Alli -
ReplyDeleteI love your patterns - they are my go to for all the baby/kid gifts I'm making these days! However, when i made this hat it came out huge! I did the right number of stitches and used the same gauge hook, but perhaps I just crochet really large? I'm using a Red Heart Super Saver yarn, so it's not super chunky.
I'm making these as gifts so I don't have the kids heads nearby to measure, and I'm slow, so i don't like to frog it back to the increasing rows if it's too big once I start making progress in the length - which is when I realize it is too big.
Any thoughts?
I've followed your pattern exactly three times and my hats keep turning out floppy and pancake like. I have a tight stitch and I've been crocheting for years but lately every hat pattern I follow never turns onto a hat but looks like a shallow bowl. What am I doing wrong?? Help!!
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how you start the ear flap! Do I start it with the last stich of row 13 of the hat, and am I understanding correctly that I need to just insert my hook in three stitches for the Sc dec?
ReplyDeleteAfter your last stich of row 13, you chain 1 then begin by putting your hook through the first two stitches. You will have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and put through all three loops at once. I'm not the author of the pattern but saw that no one had answered you so I hope this helps!
DeleteSorry that is supposed to say *pull through not put through after yarn over.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to be annoying or redundant, but I have been making your hats for a couple years and I LOVE them. They are so versatile and can be used as the foundation for a lot of other great hats (like monster hats, etc...). Anyhow, every time I make one of your hats in a toddler size, it is huge! My son is almost three and his head is in the 96 percentile of heads his age (great, I know...haha), but the toddler hat is huge on him. It actually fits me, aside from being a little too short, and Ive a larger head too! This is the 3rd toddler hat I've made with this pattern...using Red Heart and an H needle...and each turns out adult sized.
ReplyDeleteI can't imagine what I am doing wrong bc I have made hundreds of hats!
Anyone else finding this issue?
You measure head circumfence around the middle of the forehead, correct?
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one with this problem. I'm making one as a gift for my niece, I just got to row 10 and realized that the hat is way too big, and sure enough it fits my own head! And I'm usually a pretty tight crocheter, but I guess I'll have to try a smaller hook.
DeleteHow much yarn does the toddler size take? I am a yarn hoarder, and may have enough here, but need some kind of reference to know. Even if it's what kind of yarn and amount you used.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!! Your patterns are beautiful and easy to follow!
ReplyDeleteAllie, I made your Toddler beanie with flap ears for my two granddaughters; Kylee, who is 4 and Henslee, who is 18 mos for Christmas. I think they turned out really cute and now my daughter wants one. Thanks for posting how to increase for adult sizes. I am making hers in dark blue with white snowflakes. I can send you pics if you wish to see the ones I have made.
ReplyDeleteLove your patterns very easy to follow for a beginner! Thank You
ReplyDeleteLove this pattern!! I just finished making the Toddler size, but there is absolutely no way it will fit a toddler!! Tried it on my 3 year old and its tiny. Any ideas why that would be. It measures 7.25" across and 6" from top to bottom. This would be newborn size I guess. I made your butterfly hat with no problems. I am a beginner as this is my 9th hat. I love your patterns!! Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteLove your hat patterns, Alli!
ReplyDeleteWhat does the *2dc mean? I know it means 2 dc but what does* mean?
ReplyDeleteIn this pattern * denotes the start a pattern repeat. As it says in the pattern above, repeat from the * 'starting point' around until the end of the round =
ReplyDelete*2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. = repeat 2dc, 1dc over and over until you reach the end of round.
Thank you so much for this pattern! I have already made 4 of the toddler size for my daughter, 2 nieces, and my nephew. My older niece is getting one too but it will have to be a little bigger (6 years old but the size of a 7-8 year old). I'm hoping that I increase it enough for her.
ReplyDeleteIn the next row, just alternate increasing on top of one increase, then not increasing on the next one - if that makes sense - so that you end up with 65 st. You probably don't even need to add another row - 13 total should be good.
DeleteThank you for the pattern! I just finish one in a pink! Unfortunately it is big enough to fit my head, except the ties are too short! LOL I have so much to learn about yarn. It is not your pattern at all, I love your pattern, easy to follow, thank you. :D
ReplyDeleteI need a pattern to make our 6 year old grandson a ear flap hat , can you tell me where to find it
ReplyDeleteJust finished this pattern for my 2 yr old son fits perfect.pattern was really simple and easy to read. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI don't know what I am doing wrong but I just finished the pattern, I followed it word by word and it is very short. It doesn't even cover half of my 2 year old daughter. Am I missing something? Thank you
ReplyDeleteYou must have missed something - did you use sport weight yarn? Did you repeat round 8 five times?
DeleteCould it be that you used SC and not DC?
DeleteHi, just started crochet and the pattern seems easy to follow but please could you let me know, when you say DC do you mean US or UK? Thanks x
ReplyDeleteShe means US
DeleteI don't know what I did wrong.. mine is not curved down like a hat. It's kind of just flat. Any ideas what I did wrong? I'm relatively a beginner and trying to learn
ReplyDeleteDid you use a magic ring?
DeleteDear Alli, thanks for the wonderful pattern!
ReplyDeleteI have a small question, what would happen if I do not do the 3 chains in the start of every row? I started skipping them and so far so good, but I wanted to ask in case there are there for a technical reason?
There is a technical reason - you need the chains to move up to the height of the next row. If you skip them, the hat may gather on that seam line and be shorter on that side than on the other side.
