Free Pattern: Deeply Textured Hat - Premie

This hat is a modification from the adult-sized deeply textured hat from The Laughing Willow.  


Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Cotton)
Size 4.25mm hook

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
Fptc - front post treble crochet (or front post triple crochet)

Instructions: (ch-3 does not count as dc)
Round 1: Magic Ring.  Inside ring, ch 3, 10 dc.  Pull ring tight to close, sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3.  2 dc in each dc around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3.  *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 5 dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  (35 dc)
Round 5:  Ch 3.  *Fptc in next dc, dc in next dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  (18 fptc, 17 dc)
Round 6:  Ch 3.  *Dc in fptc, Fptc in dc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  (17 fptc, 18 dc)
Round 7:  Ch 3.  *Fptc in dc, Dc in fptc.  Repeat from * around.  Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.  (18 fptc, 17 dc)
Round 8-9:  Repeat round 6-7.
Opt. Round 10:  Crab stitch loosely around.  Finish off, weave in ends.


As you can see, the seam is visible but not noticeable.

  1. If you work this pattern with a G hook and sport weight yarn, it makes a wee hat just the right size for a 2-3 pound preemie.

Please note: DO NOT make anything for babies that has "holes" or Openwork - like the butterfly hat - tiny fingers can get in the holes and get tangled - cutting off circulation, which can cause REALLY serious Health issues. I am a NICU nurse and I just want to warn you, before you spend a lot of time making something that cannot be used.
