This is a 3-month size. The twisted wool yarn is from a local yarn shop near my parents' house in PA.
Supplies:
5mm hook
About ¼ skein worsted weight yarn (I used a variegated wool)
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Sc dec – single crochet decrease
Special instructions:
Sc dec – Pull up a loop in each stitch indicated, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
Instructions:
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3, dc 10, pull ring tight, join to top ch of ch 3
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc each ch around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (40)
Round 5: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 7 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (45 dc)
Round 6-10: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3. Do not finish off.
First Earflap:
Ch 1
Rows 1-2: sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc 6, ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc, sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Finish off.
Second Earflap:
Join yarn to approx. the 15th stitch from the side opposite side of the joining chs. Ch 1.
Rows 1-2: sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc 6, ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc, sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Do not finish off.
Finishing:
Loosely crab stitch around the sides of the earflaps and the edge of the hat (in the point of each earflap, crab stitch two times). Finish off, weave in ends.
Braided Strings:
Cut 12 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is about 4 in long, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.

Hi. I found a mistake in the earflaps - I've edited it, and maybe that will help. Also, if you are doing a sc dec, that will turn two sc into one sc, so two down on each side is really two on each side turning into one on each side. Does that make sense?

ReplyDeleteCassie, if you can't find a pattern for one you like, you have two options. 1-use this (or any) earflap hat pattern as a base, then either make up or find ears, eyes, nose, or whatever you want to add and just add it to the hat. 2-find an animal hat you like and add earflaps. You can use the basic concept in this pattern to add earflaps to any hat. Good luck!!

ReplyDeleteI love your patterns. A month ago I printed out Baby Ear flap pattern but it said 0-3 months. And I lost that pattern so I printed out a new one. I made a new one for my friend's daughter with the second print out but it looks a lot smaller than the original one I made with the older pattern I printed out. I compared the size to a newborn beanie I made. Was the pattern changed?

ReplyDeleteThe ch-3 does not count as a dc. Do not do 2 dcs in the joining ch 3. Just leave it for joining only. The gap is because the joining chains do not look like dcs. It is visible, but if you are chaining tightly and joining tightly, it should not be noticeable when the project is finished. You can see my seam in the close-up picture above. Hopefully that will help.

ReplyDeletefor each of the ch3 at the beginning of each row, it should only be a ch2. I did the 1st fwe rows with ch3 and there's huge gaps. The last few rows with 2 and it was blended perfectly. I should've though of the 2 for double earlier, but I just learned to crochet last month and I haven't worked a pattern in a week, so it didn't kick in right away. It's definitely obvious, and the solution to that is to ch2, NOT ch3.

Thanks for your comment, Dawn. I stick to ch-3s because that's how many chains equal a dc. The hat turns out neater for me with ch-3s. If ch-2s make a neater hat for you, then go with that!
