Free Pattern: Kid's Earflap Hat

This hat is made with 2 strands of yarn together, to fit a 19 in. head circumference.  Below are links to earflap hat patterns in other sizes made using one strand of yarn.

Toddler/Youth

I made this hat for one of my favorite little people, Jack Watson. He's one year old today! I'm so happy that you are in the world, Jack. I hope you appreciate all the hard work your Mommy did to bring you into the world, how much she loves you and how well she takes care of you. You are such a special blessing!

This hat pattern is inspired by this medium cap pattern from Tina Yanchuk. This was the first hat pattern I ever used, though I didn't really know how to read patterns at the time, so I modified it without realizing it! I really like the row of "dc around" between the increases that keeps the hat shape very round.

Supplies:
Less than one skein medium weight yarn divided into two balls (I used Caron Simply Soft)
Size 6mm hook (J/10)

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
dc - double crochet
sl st - slip stitch
dc dec - double crochet decrease (special stitch - see below)
sc dec - single crochet decrease (special stitch - see below)

Special Stitches -
dc dec: work a dc without completing the last step (2 loops on hook). In next st, work another dc, and on last step, draw yarn through all three loops on hook.
sc dec: draw up a loop in each st indicated, yo, draw through all loops on hook.

Instructions:
Work two strands of yarn together.  Ch-3 does not count as dc.
Round 1: Magic ring, ch 3, dc 11.  Pull ring tight, join with sl st to third ch in ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same ch. 2 dc in each dc around, join with sl st to third ch in ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same ch. Dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc* repeat from * around. Join with sl st to third ch in ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3, dc around. Join with sl st to third ch in ch 3.
Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same ch. dc in next 2 dcs. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next two dcs* repeat from * around. Join with sl st to third ch in ch 3.
Round 6-9: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join with sl st to third ch in ch 3. Do not finish off.

First earflap: (Working in third ch of ch 3s as a dc)
Row 1: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 7 dc.
Row 2: Ch 3, turn, dc dec over next two dc, dc in next dc, dc dec over next two dc, dc in next dc, dc dec over last two dc.
Row 3: Ch 3, turn, *dc dec over next two dc,* repeat from * two times.
Row 4: Ch 3, turn, *dc dec over next two dc,* repeat from *.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn, sc dec over three dc. Finish off, weave in ends.

Second earflap: (Working in third ch of ch 3s as a dc)
Join yarn in the 15th st from the joining ch 3s in the main hat. Work towards the front.

Braided strings:
Cut six pieces of yarn, about 28 in long.
Take three pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from outside in. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of two strands of yarn, braid firmly. When the braid is about 8 in long, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.

  1. YAYAYAYAY!!! Jack is very blessed to have such sweet friends as you. I am so excited that E knows our names and recognizes his picture! And we remind him often that we already have his future wife all picked out. O will make a wonderful in-law. ;) We love you and can't wait to try on the hat!

  3. hi alli, this is just what i was looking for!
but my 3.5 year old's head is 20". would you suggest repeating rounds 4 & 5 to make it large enough?
    thanks for sharing.

  4. I would suggest repeating row 4 and then doing a row of *2dc, dc in the next 3 st*, repeat from * around. Hopefully that will work!

  5. I got to Step 5 and was about to start on the last 3 steps when I realized that this hat I'm making on would fit a 3 month old! I don't know what happened, but I followed the directions perfectly!

  6. Dana, you can add another round or two of increases (per my last comment) and see if that makes it big enough. Or, you have a great Christmas present for a 3-month-old. ;)

  7. I figured it out, thank you so much! This is a great pattern! My son (15 months) hates hats, but he'll wear this one and only occasionally take it off!

  8. Just found your blog and LOVE it!
How would you suggest modifying this for a newborn head?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Caitlin, If you have the newborn handy, you can test out the size after round three, the second round of increases. If it's big enough to cover most of the width of the head, you can skip to round 6. To make the earflaps smaller, try making it only five stitches long. You'll have to alter the decreases, but just keep to the main idea of decreasing to a point. :)

  10. This pattern was selected as today's Free Crochet Pattern of the Day over at The Daily Crocheter. It's also posted in our Free Crochet Patterns listings under Hats. What a wonderful new baby gift. Happy Crocheting!

  11. This is exactly the kind of pattern I was looking for for my 5-month old grandson. How would I adjust the pattern to fit him?

  12. Please see my comment above about how to adjust the pattern for a newborn. :)

  13. Thank you so much for an awesome pattern, I tried couple other patterns for my son but this one I'm satisfied with the results. I did tweak the pattern just a little to fit my son's ears but the rest was perfect. I used blue and red wool yarn from lionbrand.com. Thanks for such hard work on your part! (Pattern took me an hour to complete).

  15. I'm new to crocheting & so far, this has been super easy to follow! However.... I'm in the same boat as Dana - my hat is wayyyy tiny! I'm debating tearing it & starting over for the third time, or just leaving it how it is (I do have a one month old niece that I could give it to... and for whatever reason, I missed the part about working 2 yarns together & mine is only a single piece, so then maybe it won't be so hot as we're heading into Spring now). I'm gonna turn it into a monkey cap :)

  16. HI, i have a couple questions, if done exactly to your pattern how big should this hat be? I am trying to figure out if i messed up somewhere and made mine too small, it seems small. Also, when you end a row in 6-9 and chain 3 do you do a dc in the same stitch as the ch and when you get to the end and slip into the top of the ch3 do you do a DC in the stitch right next to the ch3?. I have the worst time learning to get up to the next level when working around. there were huge gaps next to the ch3 on my first one. I think i have it figured out now, but i just want to make sure i am doing it right. Thanks, you have great patterns.

  17. Anonymous - This hat should be a little bigger than 19 in. around. I don't have the hat anymore, so I don't know how long it is, but if it's the right circumference, it should end up the right length. Sorry I can't be more help!
When you work the round, make sure you are doing a stitch count every round. If it's coming out the right number of stitches, you are doing a-ok. You should not work a dc into the same st as the chains. If you are still having trouble, you can do a search for tutorials or videos for working in the round - I'm sure there are some great ones out there!

  18. Hi Allie, Thank you for a great pattern, I like the two strands together. Instead of finishing off and weaving in I left two long strands on each earflap and pulled two long strands through the single dc to match them. Then I braided the six together! Voila, nothing to finish and hide!!

  19. I was off by a stitch by the pattern in round 4 as well (I think that's the round...1 double dc & then 2 single dc following). I left it "as is" and just kept going with an "odd" pattern there. By the time I was working singles in every row, you couldn't see the "booboo". I made 3 matching hats using coordinating yarns for my 3 nephews and one of the infant ear flap hats for my sister's fourth child due arounf Thanksgiving! They look really cute together...I'm going to have to rework the newborn hat though, mine is only slightly larger than a soda can! I'll add a round or two before the "sides" and I should be okay, I think!

  22. I love this pattern!! I am going to do it in chocolate brown and sew some laces on the front so it looks like a football hat!!! Thanks so much for sharing. Also, I couldn't figure out how to print it. Any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  23. That sounds really cute! I just added a page at the top to help if you're having trouble printing. Basically, it's easiest to just copy the text and pictures and paste them to a document, then print it from there. Hope it works out for you!

  24. Hi Alli,
Just wanted to say, as a beginner crocheter, I'm so happy that I found your blog! Being a newbie I don't want to purchase patterns until I know for sure that it's something I want to keep up, but the majority of free patterns online are a little dated. Your patterns are helping me to get my feet wet, while making things that I can't wait to put on my infant and toddler!
    Thank you!

  25. Love this pattern, but would like to make in a 20-21" circumference and 7" long. How should this pattern increase in wide and length? Thanks, Debbie

  28. Hi question. Would the beanie be the same size of you use a different yarn.. Like Red Heart WW??

    ReplyDelete
  29. I used two strands of WW together, though Caron Simply Soft is a little thinner than Red Heart. But if you wanted to use Red Heart, just use two strands, and it will still be about the same size.

  30. Hi! Just stumbled upon your blog and I'm hoping I'll be able to make lots of things. For this hat--is there an easy way to make two balls from the same skein? I'm just rolling two balls, one from either end of the yarn, and it's taking FOREVER! Thanks :)

  31. i have tryed ever which way but loose to print this pattern but am unable to print it got any idea, marie

  33. Suzanne,
I always roll my yarn into balls, so for this project I did one from each end. Sorry it's taking so long!

  34. how do I know what st to start in on each side for the ear flaps?

    ReplyDelete
  35. The first earflap is made starting in the last stitch of the hat, and the next is made 15 stitches over on the other side of the seam, and worked towards the front.

  36. I love this pattern! I would also love a write-up for the different increases (12 mo, toddler, youth, teen, adult) ... Just a thought!!! ;-). I'm not good at figuring out increases myself. I made one for my cousin and now everyone I know wants one'!!! (including me!!).

  37. so, if this hat finished is 19 inches, then it should still fit comfortably on a head that measures 20 inches right? because the yarn will stretch. so there wouldn't be a need to make an increase.

i was confused because I'm making this for a 6 year old with a 20 inch head circumference. You said you were making this for a 1 year old.
so does this mean that the finished hat is actually smaller than 19 inches, to fit the child's head of 19 inches. or that it was 19 inches and doesn't need to stretch at all to fit? just sits on the head loosely?

  42. Hi Ali I jus want to noe how do I make this pattern for my five year old daughter?

    ReplyDelete
  43. Check out the sizing information tab at the top of the blog.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Love it! But how do you work two strands of yarn together? Also, why do you have to use two strands? Does it make the hat bigger or something? I'm planning on doing this with two separate balls. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Do you have stitch counts for each row, I always like to check to make sure I'm getting it right.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Two strands together makes it warmer. I have basically the same pattern with one strand, just click on the toddler label to the right.

I don't have the stitch counts-if it's important to you, you could go through and do the math before you start. :)

  48. Could someone please tell me how I can change patterns from #4 Worsted Weight to #3 Light Worsted Weight. Our Winters are not as extreme as the United States, and Light Worsted Weight is more suitable. I am desperate for this as 99% of patterns are in Worsted Weight. I love the patterns, there is more variety, but want to be able to use our most popular Light Worsted Weight (DK or 8-Ply). Please answer this query. Barbara (Australia).
