Free Pattern: Jingle Ring Toy

My #2 is at the toy stage now, so I made some Loop Toys, but mine turned out too big for tiny hands. This is my modification.

Supplies:
Small amount of medium weight yarn, two colors.
Size 4.25 (G/6) hook (larger if you need it, but you want it to be as tight as possible so that the stuffing doesn’t show through)
Small amount of fiberfill stuffing
Yarn needle
Three jingle bells, size 22mm

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
sl st - slip stitch
sc dec - single crochet decrease (special stitch, see below)

Special Stitch:
sc dec - pull up a loop in each of the st indicated, then yo, pull through all loops on hook.

Instructions:
Rings 1 and 2:
With color 1, ch 6, connect with sl st to form a ring. Sc around, do not join. Stuff the tube as you go, until it is about 6 or 7 in. long. Sew ends together to form a ring, being careful not to twist.
Repeat with color 2.

Jingle ring:
With color 1, ch 6, connect with sl st to form a ring.
Round 1-5: Sc around (6 sc), do not join. Mark the first stitch as you go. Stuff tube.
Round 6: Change to color 2, do not finish off. Make sure color 1 stays on the inside of the tube. Sc, 2 sc, sc, sc, 2 sc, sc. (8 sc)
Round 7: Sc, 2 sc, sc, sc, sc, 2 sc, sc, sc (10 sc)
Round 8: Sc around (10 sc) (This is the widest point, so check to make sure the bell fits. If not, crochet the last couple of rows more loosely.)
Round 9: Sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc, sc, sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc, sc. Put bell into pocket and crochet around it from here on.
Round 10: Sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc, sc, dec over next 2 sc, sc
Round 11-16: Change to color 1, Sc around, marking first stitch as you go. Stuff tube.
Round 17-21: repeat rounds 6-10
Round 22-27: Repeat rounds 11-16
Round 28-32: repeat rounds 6-10
Round 33: Change to color 1, sc around, finish off with a long tail. Cut color 2. Stuff tail of color two and fiberfill into the tube. Slide rings 1 and 2 on, sew jingle ring shut.

Be sure to mark your stitches! Because you do not join, and because the work is so small, it will be difficult to count without the stitch marker.

The toy in the picture has one less row in the color 1 sections. I made a toy with the pattern as it's written here - which I gave away and forgot to take a picture of - and it turned out better.

  3. We make a lot of toys for charity; I don't believe this item would meet child safety regulations, because of the small bells; if they come out of the toy they could be ingested. Please advise how one might ameliorate this concern.

    1. I am not sure they sell the saftey jingley things in craft stores, hence why I used jingle bells. The bells themselves could not come out of the toy, but I think the little tiny ball inside conceivably could. You can find "rattle inserts" or "jingle balls" that have a ball completely contained in a plastic outside ball, which would meet saftey standards. You might have to add another round to the jingle ball part of the pattern if they are bigger than the bells, but that would be easy to do.
