Also called hanging stork pouch, hanging pod, hanging sling, hanging cocoon
Fits newborns to about two weeks old. Photography prop only—do not leave baby unattended in stork pouch. Always use with an assistant.
Finished dimensions:
37" total length top to bottom
9" front of pouch bottom to top
18" circumference of the largest part
16" from bottom to when the strap clearly begins
The pouch should stretch quite a bit with the weight of a baby (around 8 lbs).
Supplies:
Less than 1 skein chunky weight yarn
Size 6mm (J/10) hook.
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Dc dec – double crochet decrease (special stitch, see below).
Special Stitch:
Dc dec – work a dc without completing the last step (2 loops on hook). In next st, work another dc, and on last step, draw yarn through all three loops on hook.
Instructions:
Magic Ring or (ch 3, sl stitch to form ring).
Round 1: Dc 8 inside of ring, do not join. Mark first stitch as you work all rounds.
Round 2: 2 Dc in each Dc around (16 dc)
Round 3: *Dc, 2 Dc,* repeat from * around. (24 dc)
Round 4: Dc in each dc around. (24 dc)
Round 5: *Dc, Dc, 2 Dc,* repeat from * around. (32 dc)
Round 6-10: Dc in each dc around. (32 dc)
Round 11: Dc in each dc for 30 dc, in last two dc, dc dec. (31 st) Ch 2, turn.
Row 12: Dc dec over first two dc, 19 dc, dc dec in next two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 13: Dc dec over first two dc, 17 dc, dc dec in next two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 14: Dc dec over first two dc, 15 dc, dc dec in next two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 15: Dc dec over first two dc, 13 dc, dc dec in last two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 16: Dc dec over first two dc, 11 dc, dc dec in last two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 17: Dc dec over first two dc, 9 dc, dc dec in last two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 18: Dc dec over first two dc, 7 dc, dc dec in last two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 19: Dc dec over first two dc, 5 dc, dc dec in last two dc. Ch 2, turn.
Row 20-39: Dc in each dc across. (7 dc)
Finish off, weave in ends.

ReplyDeleteDana, you definitely could. You may need to add another row or two between 8 and 9 to make sure the pocket is big enough for the baby.

ReplyDeletemine doesn't look "deep" enough either. i may rip it out and try again with a K-hook just to see how that goes -- or, using a treble crochet instead of double, as it doesn't seem to stretch much. (i still have several weeks to go so i have time for trial and error).

Mine doesn't stretch much either. Any suggestions?? I am using chunky yarn as suggested with a J hook. I may try using a less chunky yarn also. May keep both of them and just use this one with the baby laying on ground??? Please suggest!!

At the request of the photographers I made the pouch for, I made it so that the holes are smaller, making the pouch less strechy. They had a little modesty issue with a little boy in a strechy pouch once. :) But if you wanted to make it more stretchy, instead of doing all dcs, alternate dc, ch 1, then in the next round dc in the ch-1-spaces and ch 1 over the dcs. That would strech a lot more. Sorry I don't have the measurements - I don't have the original anymore.

ReplyDeleteThis is great that you shared this...but mine came out much smaller than your dimensions. I don't know why...but it did. I am working on my second one and I wound up doing 3 more rows of dc for the pouch ... that was the only way I could get 7" from the bottom to the brim of the pouch. I had to make a few more changes to make this work for myself. However, I have to say thank you for giving me the basis of this in order for me to even begin to create one. You are the best! : ) I love your patterns!!

ReplyDeleteYou shouldn't use this with babies who are more than about two weeks old. But if the baby is 9 or 10 lbs at birth, you could adjust the pattern by adding another increase round (between Rounds 6 and 7) and add another row or two of "Dc around" between Rounds 10 and 11.

ReplyDeleteCregan, you don't join, but you don't turn, either. You need to start again and instead of turning, keep going around to make a full circle. Mark the first stitch as you go around so you know where you are at in the pattern. Hope it works out for you!

I had to tweak the pattern a little because I used VERY chunky yarn, but thank you so much for posting detailed finished dimensions, that helped me out alot to make sure I was making the right size for a newborn. I got it finished in just under 2 hours! Now another 6 months to wait to put my baby in it... :o)

ReplyDeleteI think I'm doing something wrong. I have chunky wieght yarn , and the pouch seems to not be big enough. I've tried going up to an 8.00mm hook and the circumference of the top of the pouch is only 14inches. I can try increasing , but I don't want to mess up the rest of the pattern.

ReplyDeleteSecond, you must crochet REALLY loosely!!!!! :)
I used Bernat Softee Chunky and a J (6.0 mm) hook. It's about 7" from bottom to top of front, about 16" circumference and the strap length is about 14".
Next time I'll use a K hook and I'll make sure to DC loosely. Luckily, Michael's had this yarn for $2 a skein. I picked up taupe, pink, and a blue & white variegated. So, I'll get lots of practice with this pattern!!
I love how simple and straightforward the pattern is, and I think I'll be switching to crocheting spiral when I make hats.
I just have a question. I have made this for two different photographers they are having problems getting the babys head to not flop fwd is there any suggetions? Both were made to the exact measurements?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that's a the problem of the prop, I think it's the problem of the setup. This is an advanced newborn photography prop. Many photogs actually use it laying down and photoshop it. I can't really help with the staging... I'm not a photographer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for this pattern! It works up quick and is great! I'm using LionBrand Homespun yarn for it and a K hook. I also found that the pouch part of it is measuring at 6 in. after the 10th round, so I'm having to add in a few rounds to make it to 9 in.

thanks so much for this awesome pattern! i'm working it up right now!! turning out lovely so far!! i would suggest MAYBE adding a gauge, but since the measurements are there it worked out for me.. i just had to go up to a 'L' -8mm hook to get the correct measurements. But it is GREAT as is, i've just found that some people may not understand to do that until after they've made the whole item and realized it's not the right size.. i checked after row 6 :) :) YOU'RE AWESOME!!
