Free Pattern: Lacy Shells Earwarmer - Adult

This pattern in a toddler/kid size here.

I made these for my sisters and sisters-in-law this Christmas.  I searched for a pattern I wanted to use, and I found a whole bunch of cute ones, but I ended up making up my own since I hadn't found exactly what I was thinking of.  After several tries to limit the number of ends I had to weave in, I gave up and just made it look the way I wanted, even though there were more ends to weave in than I prefer.  I made a no-sew rose and a large no-sew rose on an alligator clip for each one.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used various acrylic yarns)
Size 5mm hook
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
2 Buttons

Abbreviations:
Ch-chain
SC-single crochet
DC-double crochet
Sl st-slip stitch

Space-space between the second and third DCS in cluster.

Instructions:
Ch 80  (If the chain isn't long enough to wrap around your entire head and overlap a bit, increase by a multiple of 6.)
Round 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook. *Skip 2 ch, 4 dc in next ch.  Skip 2 ch, sc in next ch.  Repeat from * to end.  Sl st in the end of the last ch, sc on the other side (through the two ribs) of the end ch.   In the opposite side of the chs, *Skip 2 ch, 4 dc in next ch.  Skip 2 ch, sc in next ch.  Repeat from * to end.  Sl st to other side, finish off.

Repeat each of the following rows on each side (mirror image) of Round 1.

Row 2:  Turn so that wrong side of work is facing.  Join yarn to the "space" between the second and third dc in first 4-dc cluster of Round 1.  *4 dc in next sc.  Sc in "space."  Repeat from * across; in last "space" sl st instead of sc.  Finish off.

Row 3:  Turn so that wrong side of work is facing.  Join yarn to the "space" between the second and third dc in first 4-dc cluster of Row 2.  *4 dc in next sc.  Sc in "space."  Repeat from * across; in last "space" sl st instead of sc.  Finish off.

Row 4:  Turn so that wrong side of work is facing.  Join yarn to the "space" between the second and third dc in first 4-dc cluster of Row 3.  *4 dc in next sc.  Sc in "space."  Repeat from * across; in last "space" sl st instead of sc.  Finish off.  Weave in all ends.

While you are weaving in the ends, use one to create a stable "buttonhole" on one side of the foundation ch on the end of the very first cluster.  (It's not technically exactly centered, but it won't matter, especially if you weave it in with that in mind.)  On the other side of the earwarmer, sew two buttons on - one to the end and one a few stitches away.

  3. Hello. I started this amazing earwarmer and when I get to the end of the first row and do the sl I still have one chain left. Did I do something wrong? I tried it a few times to make sure and kept having the extra chain. Thanks! I love this and cannot wait to wear it <3

  4. CNY, I don't really know how that's happening but just start with one less chain next time. If you have already done it, just undo the extra chain and then keep going.

    2. I started using your cool pattern today (12/3/14) and am encountering the same problem (an extra chain stitch at the end of round 1) as CNY.
I'm new to crocheting, how do I "undo the extra chain and then keep going" ? I dont want to undo all my work in round 1

    3. Untie the knot, undo the chain, retie the knot close to the stitch.

  5. Great pattern! Thanks for sharing. When I got to the end of a row, I just did a slip stitch back to where I needed to start the next row. That took care of weaving in the ends. I'm going to make it shorter (start with 72) and attach an elastic hair band to the back to make it stretchy and less bulky under the hair in back. I'm also going to put a button so I can have different flowers to button on for variety. These changes came at the request of a 15 yr old girl :)

    1. Thank you for sharing. Your comments really made sense and helped. I had a hard time with the ends

    2. I made this and it doesn't seem long enough so I'm curious how you are attaching elastic, and what type?

  6. Like CNY, I ended up with an extra chain at the end. I just picked at it and took the extra chain off. Made it in an off white color with a brown flower, and its GORGEOUS :)

  7. So sorry, ladies, I just worked it out and realized I had written it starting with a cluster but I'd actually been starting with a SC. That makes it more symmetrical, and it comes out even. I updated the pattern. Thanks so much for pointing out the mistake to me!

    1. so when you finish off every row, do you finish with a sc to the mirrored row?

  9. hi Alli! I love your blog, I have pinned several of your patterns! I was wondering, is there a pattern for a scarf to go with this ear warmer for the crochet-challenged (meaning I can't come up with it on my own...LOL)? Thanks!

  11. "Sl st in the end of the last ch, sc on the other side (through the two ribs) of the end ch.   In the opposite side of the chs, *Skip 2 ch, 4 dc in next ch." I am having trouble understanding this part of the first paragraph. Where is the other side through the two ribs?? I really love this pattern but can't get past this part

    1. You are turning the piece 180 degrees and working the same exact pattern on the opposite side of the beginning chain. When working back along the beginning chain the two clusters (one on top of the other) will have a center hole. Good Luck!

  12. Hi Alli - this is a great pattern, I really like it and it looks beautiful! Would you (or anyone!) happen to know, if I wanted to make it longer how many chains I should be increasing by?

I'm a beginner crochet'er and I have trouble deviating from patterns so any help you can give would be great!

    Thanks so much.

    1. I think you'd increase it by a multiple of 6. Somebody let me know if I am wrong here. ;)

  13. Any suggestions for how many to chain for a 5 year old? I am awful at making the correct size for my little one. Thanks!

    1. I would try 60. You will know if it is the right size after making the "Round," so if it's not right at that point, Increase or decrease by a multiple of 6.

  14. I am really uncertain after the slip stitch into the last chain from round one...so are you actually SC into the same stitch that you SLst into, just behind it?I will keep trying until this makes sense.

  15. Is this US standard pattern or European?

  16. This was a lot of fun! I am pretty brand spanking new to Crochet, but this pattern was surprisingly easy to follow ( looked a little complicated on first read through, but once you get into the groove, not so much!) thanks for sharing this! <3

  17. I'm confused on the row 2 and 3 and 4 etc. where it says to "join yarn" and the "space" and it just doesn't make sense... Can someone explain it to me?

    2. I made a slip stitch and pulled it through where it said, and then my sc, went on from there. You know the slip stitch like you would start a new project. Mine turned out like the pic but to short for what I was hoping for so I'm going to modify it.

  19. I had to add to the starting chain because I used a smaller hook and thinner yarn, but it turned out lovely! Thank you for your design :)

  24. By chance how long and wide this is. Thank you

  25. Love this earwarmer. I made about 20 for my nursing class and they really enjoy them.
I did make a few modifications. I used a 5.5 mm I hook instead of the H. This fit eveyones head without having to change pattern stitches. In the beginning I was using the "space" next the the sc and not inside of it. I have done it both ways and the pattern is still very flattering. I didn't cut and fasten off at my rows I slip stitched back like some others have so I worked on the right/front side of the pattern the whole way through, kinda of like in a round. Later I only made a mirror of 3 rows instead of 4 for a slimmer ear warmer that still covered my ears. Very happy with it and the shell stitch I'm sure I'll make more, they have made great gifts hope this helps someone I'll try and make a link of of the photo.
Thanks so much to the up loader beautiful pattern :)

  26. Made this according to specifications, and it came out about 4 inches too short to fit my head. It would have fir my 7 year old daughter. So I modified it and added several rows into the ends, one of which I left a hole open for a big button. Beautiful head wrap, it came out lovely!

  27. I haven't read all the comments, so I don't know if someone else has already suggested this, but I limited the strings I had to weave in by simply slip stitching to the next place I needed to be. I think I only had two ends to weave in by doing it that way. Also, I single crocheted around the finished headband (except slip stitching in the sc between the dc-four clusters to preserve the scalloped effect), chaining 6 at the end for a more sturdy button loop. Hope this all makes sense! This is a lovely and very 'clear and simple' pattern by the way! Just thought I'd share my suggestions :) .

  28. This is quite confusing. I read through the comments about rows 2-4 and I am still lost. I even studied the picture. Someone please explain. A video tutorial would be epic.

  29. I am also having trouble to where to start my second round is on top of the first row or the bottom, and is the next cluster in the middle of the ones in row before then sc in same as row before?? A video would be nice. I want to make this I love the lacy pattern this is just complicating me.

  31. How many inches wide is your finished ear warmer? Mine is only about 2 inches...
