Free Pattern: Girl's Room Wall Decor Letter 'E'

I thought #1 needed something new on her wall, so I whipped up a big letter E for over her bed.  She and I both love how it turned out.

This would also work for any other letter that is all straight sticks (L, T, H, F, I).

Supplies:
4 colors worsted weight yarn
Size 5mm hook
Opt tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Thumbtacks for hanging

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
Sc - single crochet
Sp - space

Instructions:
For an E, make 10 two-round granny squares, as follows.

Round 1 (with first color): Magic Ring.  Inside of ring, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2.  *3 dc, ch 2.  Repeat from * two times.  Pull magic ring - not totally tight - just until the round lays flat.  Attach to top ch of ch 3 with sl st.  Finish off with invisible finish.
Round 2 (with second color): Attach to any ch-2 sp with a sl st.  Inside first ch-2 sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2; 3 dc, ch 2.  In 3 remaining ch-2 spaces, (3 dc, ch 2) two times.  Attach to top ch of ch 3 with sl st.  Finish off with invisible finish for visible edge.

Sew squares together in an E shape with any granny square joining method.  I used this one.

Sc around the whole E.  (You could probably skip this if you wanted, since you can't see it.)

Shell edging around the whole E:
Attach color with sl st.  In second sc from hook, 5 dc.  Skip a sc, sl st.  Repeat around.  On outside corners I omitted the "skip a sc" on either side of one shell.  On the inside corners, I did the normal shell if the sl st landed on the corner, but if the shell landed on the corner I only did 3 dc.  Finish off, weave in ends.

I added this "Skamamamum" flower to the side.  It turned out looking adorable and frilly.  It was a bit of a pain to make, though, and it doesn't really lay flat.  But thankfully you can't tell when it's hanging on the wall.

I used the loops on the wrong side to hook the thumbtacks.

  9. LOVE this idea, and my own name starts with "T"!! But I think, as for curvy letters, I suppose one could use granny triangles, maybe? I think these would be really cute appliqued on throw pillows too, you think?!!.. Thanks for sharing your pattern, and have a great weekend!! ~tina

  14. I would think curvy letters would be achievable if you added a diagonal half granny to create "curved" corners.

  15. Would like to make a crocheted B. Have you made one?

  16. You could make a C by using top of T on either end o stick:) Often see curvy letters squared. Also with edging you might be able to curve it.

    1. I have never made a triangle granny, but if you could do that, you could put it between two lines of squares, and that should look like an M.
