Free Pattern: Lacy Shells Hat - Newborn

6 month size here.

This sweet, lacy hat pattern will require intermediate skill level.  I modified one of my favorite stitches - the close scallop stitch from The Crochet Stitch Bible - creating increases for this feminine hat.

I made a stitch diagram for this pattern, to make it easier to "see," but, obviously, the diagram is meant to be used together with the pattern.  All the information in the pattern is not included in the diagram.

For a 3-month-old, add one more round at the bottom.  The hat has plenty of stretch if you don't crochet too tightly.

Check out Jenn's cute baby bird hat based off of this pattern.  She added earflaps, too!  SO cute!

  9. Anonymous, make the 6-month size pattern and add one more row of shells at the end. That fit my 20-month-old.

  11. I need help. I dont understand what it means when it says " in space". I got stuck at that part

  12. @Anonymous- I was confused by the "in space" part at first as well, but then I just started putting the sc on top of the third dc stitch, skipping over the first 2 dc and the last one! I hope that helps and makes sense! I also finished off this hat with 4 rows of single crochet stitches all around! :)

  13. I was hoping you could help me. I would like to make this for a 7 year old girl. But I am not sure how to make it bigger for her. I can crochet like mad but patterns, well not my strong suit.

  14. Hi - this is a cute pattern and I'm gonna try it, but like Anonymous above, I'm confused when you say "in space." The diagram seems to indicate that they are put into SC spaces, but I can't get my work to line up with your diagram, so I'm gonna wing it :) I guess that makes it my pattern then, right? haha!

  16. Hi! I am not understand, is it scheme for a half of hat or for a hole hat?

  17. The stitch diagram is not meant to be taken by itself. It is a guide to understand the written pattern, which is written for the whole hat. If the stitch diagram is easier for you to understand, you can just repeat the pattern of the last row (clusters in scs, scs in center of clusters) until Round 14.

  19. I just love this pattern so much!! Thanks for sharing!! How would you ammend it for 2T/3T/4T? I've "winged" it a few times for a bigger size and they came out fine, but a pattern to follow would be awesome;) hint hint:) haha!

  22. I LOVE this pattern (and you other patterns too)! I've made it multiple times, and it is always a favorite! My sister-in-law just had her baby prematurely, and I was wondering how I would modify this for a premie? Thank you!

    1. Maybe try making all the clusters with only 3 dc instead of 4? This pattern is super hard to adjust the normal way, so modifying the stitch might be your best bet, though it's not a guarantee that it will come out nicely!! Maybe try another pattern for right now, and gift her this hat when she grows a little bit!

  23. How many repeats of the pattern should there be in each of rounds 5-14? The hat looks a little narrow and long to me compared to standard newborn head measurements. Is the fit correct? Or am I doing something wrong?
