6 month size here.
This sweet, lacy hat pattern will require intermediate skill level. I modified one of my favorite stitches - the close scallop stitch from The Crochet Stitch Bible - creating increases for this feminine hat.
I made a stitch diagram for this pattern, to make it easier to "see," but, obviously, the diagram is meant to be used together with the pattern. All the information in the pattern is not included in the diagram.
For a 3-month-old, add one more round at the bottom. The hat has plenty of stretch if you don't crochet too tightly.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (pictured - I Love This Cotton)
Size 5mm hook
Opt tapestry needle for weaving in/sewing on flower
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sc - single crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
St - stitch
Space - Space between second and third dcs in any given 4 dc group
Instructions:
Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside ring, ch 3, 3 dc, 2 sc, 4 dc, 2 sc. Pull ring tight, join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3, turn. (3 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in next sc. 2 sc in space. (4 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in second sc. 2 sc in space. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 3, turn. (3 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in next sc. 2 sc in space. 4 dc in next sc. Sc in space. (4 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in second sc. 2 sc in space. 4 dc in sc. Sc space. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3, turn. 3 dc in first sc. Sc in space. (4 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in second sc. Sc in space. *4 dc in next sc. Sc in space. Repeat from * one time. (4 dc, sc) in first sc. 4 dc in second sc. Sc in space. 4 dc in sc. Sc in space. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
Rounds 5 - 14: Ch 3, turn. 3 dc in first sc. Sc in space. *4 dc in sc. Sc in space. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
At the end of round 14, finish off, weave in ends.

ReplyDelete@Anonymous- I was confused by the "in space" part at first as well, but then I just started putting the sc on top of the third dc stitch, skipping over the first 2 dc and the last one! I hope that helps and makes sense! I also finished off this hat with 4 rows of single crochet stitches all around! :)

The diagram seems to indicate that they are put into SC spaces, but I can't get my work to line up with your diagram, so I'm gonna wing it :) I guess that makes it my pattern then, right? haha!

ReplyDeleteThe stitch diagram is not meant to be taken by itself. It is a guide to understand the written pattern, which is written for the whole hat. If the stitch diagram is easier for you to understand, you can just repeat the pattern of the last row (clusters in scs, scs in center of clusters) until Round 14.

Maybe try making all the clusters with only 3 dc instead of 4? This pattern is super hard to adjust the normal way, so modifying the stitch might be your best bet, though it's not a guarantee that it will come out nicely!! Maybe try another pattern for right now, and gift her this hat when she grows a little bit!
DeleteHow many repeats of the pattern should there be in each of rounds 5-14? The hat looks a little narrow and long to me compared to standard newborn head measurements. Is the fit correct? Or am I doing something wrong?
