Free Pattern: Lacy Shells Hat - 6 Months
Newborn size here.
This sweet, lacy hat pattern will require intermediate skill level. I modified one of my favorite stitches - the close scallop stitch from The Crochet Stitch Bible - creating increases for this feminine hat.
I made a stitch diagram for this pattern, to make it easier to "see," but, obviously, the diagram is meant to be used together with the pattern. All the information in the pattern is not included in the diagram.
Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (pictured - I Love This Cotton)
Size 5mm hook
Opt tapestry needle for weaving in/sewing on flower
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Sc - single crochet
Sl st - slip stitch
St - stitch
Space - Space between second and third dcs in any given 4 dc group
Instructions:
Round 1: Magic Ring. Inside ring, ch 3, 3 dc, 2 sc, 4 dc, 2 sc. Pull ring tight, join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.

Round 7-15: Ch 3, turn. 3 dc in first sc. Sc in space. *4 dc in sc. Sc in space. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to top ch of ch 3.
At the end of round 15, finish off, weave in ends.

Adorable shells hat!
ReplyDeleteSoo nice! ;)
ReplyDeleteAli, You are so talented and enjoy your patterns used to bless others. I made the hat last night following the diagram and photo. The written directions do not match beginning with Row 5. It turned out so lovely.
ReplyDeleteSorry about that! I knew I had forgotten to do something. ;)
ReplyDeleteYes!!! I've been waiting for a shell pattern, thank youuuuuu!!!
ReplyDeleteHi! Thanks for your patterns! They are so great. I consider myself an intermediate crocheter and I am going to try to launch an etsy store and I don't know how to make any great looking patterns yet and I am thankful for your beautiful ones! I am going to blog about some of your hats I am making to match some diaper covers. :) blog link is knitlessknitter.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThanks again! :)
I love the way this hat looks! It's so adorable!
ReplyDeleteDo you have any suggestions for making it to fit a 2 year old?
Thanks in advance!
Yes! a hat for a 2 year old! My daughter is 16 months, but has a HUGE head! : )
ReplyDeleteHow can I keep increasing this to make an adult size hat? This is beautiful and I love that the shells start right at the top. Just having some trouble trying to keep increasing. Any help would be amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou will probably have to map it out first. See in the diagram, how you have to set up an increase row with some extra scs in the row before? I'd copy the diagram onto some scratch paper and map out several more increase rows (with the increases staggering sides so it doesn't end up wonky) before I attempted it with yarn.
ReplyDeleteHi there Alli. I found your blog & this pattern by mere chance and I loved how this hat looked so I thought I had to give it a try (many friends of mine had babies this year and I tried to use different patterns for the hats I knitted for each one of their babies). I LOVED the final result and one of my friends whom I already gave one of these hats to really liked it. Other people have seen it and they loved it as well. The open rose idea is sooo smart... a bit hard to make but I loved it, especially vs. the "not-open" roses I had made in the past. I included my flicker site so you can see the 2 versions I made (pictures next to each other - I think you have to click on my name to go there). What a great pattern, I just wanted to say thanks for sharing! :) Happy holidays.
ReplyDeleteDo you have an adult size pattern for this? I normally can figure out increasing, but I am new to this type of pattern and don't understand the diagram. My friend is starting Chemo in a week and really likes this hat, but I can't figure out how to make it big enough for her.
ReplyDeleteThis is a tough pattern to increase, since you have to set up an increase round in the round before. I would just use double crochets to increase to the right circumference, then make the lacy shell stitch pattern on the rest of the hat. You can see the way to do dc increases in the Sizing Information tab at the top of the blog.
DeleteHi Alli, Can you please define where the stitches are placed beginning at Row 2 & 3. There are more double crochets to a row given work in than the single crochets so I am lost why you refer more going into the singles to do the double crochet stitches to each row?? Please check and advise on what I am missing at the start. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Allí, how could I adjust this pattern to fit my adult head?
