This is a 9-12 month size. It should fit an approx 19" head circumference. Sweet little #2 is 1 year old, with a 18.5" head circumference.
Supplies:
5mm hook
Worsted weight yarn (I used acrylic)
Abbreviations:
Ch – chain
Dc – double crochet
Sc – single crochet
Sc dec – single crochet decrease
Special instructions:
Sc dec – Pull up a loop in each stitch indicated, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.
Instructions: (ch-3 does not count as dc)
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3, dc 10, pull ring tight, join to top ch of ch 3
Round 2: Ch 3, 2 dc each dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (20 dc)
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (30 dc)
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (40)
Round 5: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 3 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (50 dc)
Round 6: Ch 3. Dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 7: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next 9 dc, repeat from * around. Join to top ch of ch 3. (55 dc)
On Rounds 9 and 11: For the purple rows, instead of doing dc around, I did a v stitch: ch 3, dc in first dc. *skip one dc, 2 dc in next dc* around.
First Earflap:
Ch 1
Row 1: Sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 8 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Finish off.
Second Earflap:
Join yarn to approx. the 10th stitch from the side opposite side of the joining chs. Ch 1.
Row 1: Sc 12, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 8 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc 10, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 6 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 5: Sc 8, ch 1, turn.
Row 6: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 4 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 7: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc next 2 sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: Sc dec over first two sc. Sc dec over last two sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Sc dec over two sc. Finish off.
Finishing:
Sc around, with two sc in the point of each earflap. Finish off, weave in ends.
Add pom-pom.
Braided Strings:
Cut 6 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take 3 pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is desired length, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.

ReplyDeleteI am just loving your patterns. I just made a newborn earflap hat and it is adorable. I found in the comments on that post that after increasing, it should be 12" circumference. That helped me a lot because I guess either I crochet tighter or I use skinnier yarn so with that I knew I needed to increase one more row.

ReplyDeleteI can do all that too, i have the same problem! And my little pug dog, needs my attention too. I waste too much paper trying to get these patterns.
DeleteYou could copy the pattern part and put it in a Word document and then print it. Or sometimes (if you don't have Mac) you can select the pattern part and there's an option in "print" that allows you to print your selection. If you do have a Mac then you can click "print" in "file" and at the bottom of the "print" box you can open it as a PDF. Click on that and you can print certain pages instead of the whole site.
DeleteOR you can click FILE then PRINT PREVIEW then arrow through to find the page numbers you want then click on the printer in the upper left and click the circle in front of PAGES and in the box put 1-3 (or whatever) then hit PRINT.
DeleteAnonymous, I just copy the pattern text and paste it into Word and then print it. That way you only get the pattern. Problem solved. Be happy!

DeleteI am trying to make this hat but the past two times I used this pattern, the hat ends up looking like a pot holder and doesn't take shape. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I thought maybe I missed something the first time so I started over and it did the same thing on the second time. I'm new at working with patterns but familiar with the basics of crocheting. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I thought I followed all the directions including yarn weight and needle size, and pulled my yarn tight, but it looks more like a yamaka with earflaps - haha. User error I'm sure since so many others had success with it..... Anybody have any tips for this newbie? :) Just want mine to look like yours!

Does the "seam" go at the back or on the side? I'm confused because the ear flap starts right where the 'seam'is and I think I need to keep that in back so would need to either sc over a number of stitches or do it by making each one like the 2nd earflap... HELP
ReplyDeleteI just got to the earflap step and was wondering the same thing. I definitely want to keep the seam at the back, instead of just beind one of the earflaps! Love the hat, I'll try and fix the earflap issue on my own I suppose. I'll definitely check back to look for a response to this though.
DeleteI started the earflaps with the seam on the side over the ear. No one ever notices the seam - seriously!! - so I just went with the way to weave in the least ends. If your seam bothers you, just break off and attach the yarn 5 st over from the seam, make the earflap. Then attach the yarn again 5 st on the other side of the seam, make the earflap, and then do the finishing row around.
DeleteOk what I did for the earflaps, since they're supposed to be 10 stitches apart, was ch 1 and sc 5 from the back seam, then continue on doing the 12 sc and making the earflap. Then I attached the yarn again at the back seam, and did the same thing in the other direction.
ReplyDeleteSo total of 17 sc in each direction from the back seam, then the earflaps are worked in the last 12 on each side. The back of the hat will have 1 sc row more than the front. It worked out well and everything lined up.

ReplyDeleteMy hats are turning out very big. the Toddler size can fit some adults and 9-12 month fits kids. I never thought that I crochet big, but maybe I was wrong. Anyone else having this problem? Also I love this pattern, just having problem with the size.
ReplyDeletei had the same problem with the 9-12 month size. i decided to follow the pattern as is, removing the row with 2 dc every 9 st. it turned out a little smaller width & length
DeleteI'm having the same issue, but have made this hat in other sizes with no problems. So I checked and found that I had worked 22 dc in the 2nd row, then more added in each row after that. So that first mistake resulted in many extra sts, ending up with 66 sts in the 12 row. So I'll have an adult hat if I add a couple more rows.

ReplyDeleteAlways do the dcs in the first dc from the previous row. It may seem like there is a gap, and there may be a small one, but once the hat is all done it will look like a seam, and no one will notice it.

DeleteThank you for posting this pattern. I'm new to crochet and Im doing the 9-12 month size because it says its for a 19" head (which seems kind of big for that age). I just finished the first earflap and my hat is more for a 14'' head. I'm using Red Heart Soft Baby Steps acrylic yarn in worsted weight with a 5mm hook. How did it end up so small? I'm trying to make a hat for my 20 month old. Her head is 18.5". Thanks.

ReplyDeleteHi, I love this pattern, it's so cute! I have a question regarding the ear flap part for the 6-9 month pattern. I made the first earflap no problem but I don't understand where the second ear flap is placed. Pattern says "join approximately the 10th stitch from the opposite side of the joining chains." Would that be the seam? How many chains from the left of the seam would I join for the earflap? Or how many chains are in between the earflaps? I appreciate your help.

I crochet a lot of hats, and I'm wondering about your earflap directions. In the picture, it really looks like you used DCs for the rows, but the directions say SC. I followed your pattern exactly and the earflaps turned out as these tiny little triangles that looked nothing like the picture. I checked your other patterns and they also say SC for the earflaps, but the photos show DC. What am I missing? Thanks!
