Free Pattern: Crossed Texture Hat - Premie

Newborn size here.
3-month size here.

This is a thicker texture that I've seen a lot on Etsy.    It is simple, though it might not be a great starter project for beginners.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Cotton)
5mm (H/8) hook

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
Crossed dc in same st - do a double crochet, then insert hook behind just completed dc and make another dc.
Crossed dc - skip one dc, dc in next dc.  Then dc in the skipped dc.
St - stitch

Technique for starting each round -
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc in stitch behind.  Then continue forward as usual with the crossed dcs.  That will count as a pair of crossed dc.  You will move back a stitch each time, but because you can't see the seam, it won't matter.
Tip for ending each round - It can be hard to find the top ch of the ch 3 at the end of the round, so look for that "behind" dc in the first pair, follow it up to its "insert hook" spot, then go one st back and there's your ch.

Instructions: (read tips in bold before beginning!)
Round 1: Magic ring, 6 pairs crossed dc.  (12 dc)
Round 2: In each dc, crossed dc in same st. (24 dc)
Round 3: *In next two st, crossed dc in same st.  In next pair, crossed dc.  Repeat from * five times. (36 dc)
Round 4-10: Crossed dc around.  (36 dc)  Finish off, weave in ends.

For the embellishment, I used this adorable butterfly pattern from Little Birdie Secrets.  I used the "large" size, I Love This Cotton and a size 5mm hook.

  2. Thanks, Angie. The size is Preemie, and if you look under the "size information" link at the top of the blog, it will give you the head circumference that it should fit. If you google "video crossed double crochet" you will get a bunch. :)

  6. Hi Alli,
I just taught myself to crochet and have used several of your patterns...they are great! Thanks! On this one I can't quite figure round 4. I have 30 dc after round 3, and 4 says to repeat the pattern 9 times, so it must take only 3 of the stitches each time? It says in next st crossed dc...but don't I use two stitches for that? Since it doesn't say crossed dc in same stitch? The only way I can figure to make it work to end up with 40 dc is to do crossed dc in next 2, then crossed dc in the same stitch, repeat for 9 times. Is that it??
    Thanks a bunch!

  9. I'm a little lost on your instructions here. In the Magic ring you don't say how many stitches I would need. Can you help me please?
