Loosely crab stitch around the sides of the earflaps and the edge of the hat (in the point of each earflap, crab stitch two times). (If this is too tight for you, try sc around instead) Finish off, weave in ends.
Braided Strings:
Cut 12 pieces of yarn, about 16 in long.
Take six pieces of yarn together. Put hook through loop on the tip of the earflap, from the inside out. Pull a loop of the yarns through, and pull the tail end through the loop. With three groups of four strands of yarn, braid. When the braid is desired length, tie a knot at the end, trim fringe to desired length.
Loopy Flower:
Round 1: Magic Ring, 8 sc. Pull tight to close. Join with sl st to first sc.
Round 2: Ch 8. Sl st in same st. *Ch 8. Sl st in next st. Repeat from * around, with the final sl st in the base of the first ch loop. Finish off, weave in ends or leave ends for tying onto hat.

Adorable, and I love your color choices! I have a ball of that same twist, and I've been trying to decide what to do with it---thanks for the idea. :)
ReplyDeleteBTW, something I've discovered when working with your patterns---if, instead of chaining 3 at the beginning of each row and counting that as your first DC, you chain 2 and DO NOT count the chain as your first stitch (for instance, in this pattern, for row 2, you would ch2, then 2dc in that first stitch), you can make your sl st to join the row into the top of an actual stitch, instead of into the 3rd ch of your initial ch3. The ch2 becomes a filler, making a gap-less, almost invisible seam.
Hello Ms. Heather,
DeleteI do this same thing, when I Crochet.
I don't count the ch-3 as a dc. The 2 dc is supposed to be in the first stitch. If you sl st into an actual stitch, the seam moves around, and I like mine to be nice and straight. :)
ReplyDeleteI love how the braided strings enhance the rest of the design. Looks great.
ReplyDeleteI was trying to figure out how to increase the 3 month size hat and then you uploaded this one! Thanks so much Alli!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I am so excited you posted the 6 month size! I love this hat!
ReplyDeleteNot sure what I did wrong but this hat ended up fitting me lol. I guess it is a good thing I picked wool I liked.
ReplyDeleteI used Loops & Threads Charisma yarn and thought it might have some stretch to it (maybe too much) but I'm new to crocheting so who knows what happened.
Anyways I think I will try again with some different yarn as I would like my son to have this hat :)
Loops and Threads Charisma is a chunky weight yarn. It's about twice as thick as a worsted weight yarn, which is what this pattern calls for. When you use a bigger yarn, the hat comes out bigger. :) If you want a pattern for a chunky weight yarn, my fuzzy bear hat has a 6-month pattern. Check out the right sidebar for the labels. Click on 6-months and the fuzzy bear pattern will be there. Then you can add earflaps if want. :)
ReplyDeleteAlli, thanks so much for all of the fantastic patterns! I've bookmarked so many of your patterns via Pinterest and have made some great things so far. Thanks again! Keep up the fantastic work! <3
ReplyDeletealli, what should the measurements be for this hat? I am on round 11 and it doesnt look deep enough or should it not be because of the ear flaps? Im sorry. I feel like I am always asking questions
ReplyDeleteIt should be approx a 17" head circumference. The depth is more approximate, I added one more row than the 3 month. You can add another if you think it needs it... with the earflaps, the depth is a little more forgiving, but it's usually better to err too long than too short. They will always grow into it. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat would I do if I wanted to make one like this for myntoddler?
ReplyDeleteI am looking for a child's hat pattern my friend had as a child about 35-40 years ago. The base of the hat was a band that went from one ear over the top of the head to the other ear with strings that tied under the chin. Then, from the top of the back side of the ear to ear band was several crocheted curls which were gathered up to look like a ponytail of spiral curls. I have been looking for this pattern for a long time to no avail. Please answer to my email juden4@hotmail.com because I have no idea if I will be able to find this forum again or not. I just stumbled on it opening an email. Thanks so much, Judy Endow
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern! Made it last night but I used "baby" yarn and the hat turned out about newborn size and not 6 month. Should have checked the gauge! Making another one tonight using I Love This Yarn so hopefully it will turn out bigger! Thank you so much for a FREE cute pattern!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for such an adorable pattern! I am making a hat to sell and I really appreciate you allowing people to sell things made with your patterns, and especially such a cute pattern for free!
ReplyDeleteReally like this pattern, but can't get started. How do I make 10 Double crochets with only 3 stitches chained?
ReplyDeleteFollow the link to the magic ring tutorial. You make the chains and dcs inside the ring.
ReplyDeleteI perfer the peaches and cream brand yarn its very soft and versitile but still firm
ReplyDeleteI have been crocheting for two years and I still don't under stand the abbreviations for crochet patterns!
ReplyDeleteHi Alli,
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great patterns and the great site.
Have you considered using PayPal donation button? You can include a little link that says "If you would like to show your appreciation for the patterns, you can make a donation through PayPal." I found this on a midwifery site Spinningbabies.com > their advice helped me have a great birth, and I was so happy to donate. Just a thought.
Thanks again and all the best!
Alex
I made a baby blanket for my nephew's future daughter (due in March) and had some yarn left. I found your cute hat directions and used the left over yarn to make a hat. It came out so cute. I used the magic ring directions, which I have never heard of before. What a great idea, so easy to do. I added a crochet flower to the hat. It really came out cute and I finished the whole project during the first half of a football game my husband and I were watching. I'm sure the hat will be a hit at the shower next week. Thank you for the great pattern. B
ReplyDeleteThank you for your adorable pics and patterns. I made two of the ear flap hats for my friends' twin boys shower this past week, and they were a hit. I'm expecting twin girls and plan to conquer that pretty shells hat (pink and yellow pic) for them to wear home from hospital. :0)
ReplyDeleteI'm having a problem with choosing the correct yarn. You say you use 1/3 skein worsted weight yarn, but what does that mean? I'm still a novice so I'm still learning so any help would be appreciated!
ReplyDeleteAlli, thank you so much for posting these free patterns! I am just a beginner myself but found your instructions to be easy to follow and I was very excited when I finished my first hat! I ended up adding a row to the hat and then adding some more rows to make an aviator hat and it came out adorable! I can't wait to try our some of your other patterns!
ReplyDeleteHi Allie!
ReplyDeleteI'm an avid crochet freak myself, and this is a wonderfull pattern. I'ver already crochet a hat for my 3month old, and it's adorable :D
I was wondering if I could do a tutorial for this pattern on YouTube? I didn't quite understand your claimer, so I'm just going to ask bluntly and get a clear answer back. What I will be doing is just showing them how it's made, and I'll ofcourse link back to your site, and you'll get all the credit for it.
Please mail me at;

Thank You :)
Thank you so much for this pattern. I've been looking for this exact type of one for awhile now. I love your blog too :)
ReplyDeleteI love all your patterns. I also have two little girls and these hats look so adorable on them. thanks :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great selection of hat patterns! Thank you very much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteWhat did I do wrong!? Mine turned out like a wavy douille! I'm just a beginner, but this a very simple pattern. I have followed similar patterns with no problems. It's such a cute hat. I'd really like for it to turn out!
ReplyDeleteHi:
DeleteJust be careful that you are double crocheting the right way. The first time I did it I had the same result. So I refreshed my memory on double crocheting steps, and it turned out perfectly. Becky Mowat
I made this in red worsted and on row 6 I continued to increase to 60 stitches. For accent I added white 'fun fur' when crocheting row 10. When I finished each earflap, I simply chained 30 stitches, making the ties. I didn't edge this hat; I felt the white 'fun fur' was enough accent. This will match the sweater and booties I made for my great-granddaughter for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI love looking at the variations of patterns you make! Sometimes I'm not sure if I like a pattern but then I see the different things you do with it and I love it! Thank you so much for posting these.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions on modifying for a thicker yarn? I used a thicker soft baby yarn and a j hook. By the time i got to row 6 i knew it was too big for my 15 month old and by the time i got to row 9i realized it was perfect for me. I'm just going to make smaller one and we can have matching ones lol
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Alii for posting this adorable hat pattern! I love hats with ear flaps, because we get so much wind here! I am relearning my crochet skills now that I am semi retired with my 4th grandchild on the way! I am grateful for your patterns that are so clear and easy to follow! Thanks again.

ReplyDeletedo you have a gauge for this pattern? Please answer to meridee14@comcast.net instead of the other address. thanks!
ReplyDeleteWhat an adorable hat.....going to try making it with Simply Soft Caron....do you have a gauge to follow?
ReplyDeleteCould someone tell me what size head in inches this hat fits? the 2 month old baby I'm making this for has a 15 inch round head and I wanted to make something he can grow into a little bit because he grows so fast, I'm not sure the 3 month hat would work!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
