Free Pattern: Lamb Bonnet

I wanted to make a lamb bonnet, so I looked around on Etsy until I found this one that I loved and used it as inspiration for mine.  This pattern is worked as a rectangle, then stitched together.  You will have to push the puff stitch out to the right side every other row.

This pattern should be fairly easy to adjust for bigger sizes.  The adjustments listed are my best guess; I have only made the newborn size, so if you have the baby or kid available, it would be wise to measure for length after the first (sc) row and for depth before the last (sc) row.  (Baby doll pictured has head circumference of 14".)

Supplies:
Chunky weight yarn (I used Loops and Threads Charisma Off White)
Size 6mm (J/10) hook
Small amount worsted weight yarn (for insides of ears - I used I Love This Cotton pink)
Size 5mm (H/8) hook
Yarn needle

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Sl St - slip stitch
Tc - triple crochet (or treble crochet)

Special Stitch:
3 dc cluster - Make 3 dcs within one step of completion (4 loops on hook), YO, pull through all four loops.

Instructions:
Using chunky yarn and size 6 hook, ch 32.  (for 3-months, ch 35; for 6-months, ch 38; for 12-months, ch 41; for toddler, ch 44)
Row 1: Sc in second ch from hook and in each sc across.  (31 sc)
Row 2:  Ch 2, turn.  *Dc in next 2 sc.  3 dc cluster (see special stitches above) in next sc.  Repeat from * 9 times.  Dc in last sc.
Row 3 - 8:  Ch 2, turn.  *Dc in next 2 dc.  3 dc cluster in next dc.  Repeat from * 9 times.  Dc in last dc.
(for 3-months, 3-10; for 6-months, 3-12; for 12-months, 3-14; for toddler, 3-16)
Row 9:  Ch 1, turn.  Sc in each dc across.  (31 sc)
Fold in half with right sides together, folding the rows in half so that the ends of each row touch each other.  Slip stitch together inside loops of row 9.  Finish off.  Weave in ends.

Ears (make 2 with chunky yarn and size 6 hook, make 2 with inner ear color worsted weight yarn and 5 hook):
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3.  11 dc.  Slip stitch into top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3.  In next dc, 2 dc, 1 tc, 2 dc.  Dc in next 5 dc.  In next dc, 2 dc, 1 tc, 2 dc.  Dc in next 4 dc.  Sl st to top ch of ch 3.  Finish off.

Finishing: Sew ears together (I used the puffy yarn and sewed through every other inner-ear stitch).  Sew ears on each each side to third puff row from the face, towards the bottom.
For strings, cut 6 lengths of yarn, 18 inches long.  Insert crochet hook from inside of corner out, pull 3 lengths through to make a loop, pull yarn through loop.  Braid.  Tie off, trim fringe.

  8. Cute pattern! My new niece or nephew will be really cute in this hat come January!! When making the ears, there is a stitch that is abbreviated tc. I have never seen that one before, is there an easy way for you to explain that to me? Sorry if that's a dumb question! Thank you so much!

  9. Sorry, Laura, I forgot to put that one in the abbreviations. It's a triple crochet (or a treble crochet). Not a dumb question!

  10. Hi again! I just have to tell you how much I love this pattern. I've made two already, one blue and one white. Without the ears though, I really love the look but the bonnet is so cute on its own!

  12. Hi Alli,
I really like to make this for my new niece who will appearance pretty soon, but I am not sure if I have the size correct. I have the rectangle to be 12x5.5 is that about correct? Thanks.

    1. Mine was 15x7, so I'd say add on if you can. To avoid doing all the work again, you could add another row or two, then sew them together, then do an edging of scs to make it longer in the back.
      All the best!

  16. I must be missing something, but how do you add the pink to the inside of the ears? It doesn't say to change colors anywhere & I don't see instructions for this part.

    Thanks for your help,

  17. You make 2 ears in chunky weight for outer ear and 2 in worsted weight for inner ears. Then you sew the inner ear to the outer ear. It's in the instructions.
