Free Pattern: Crossed Texture Hat - Newborn
Premie size here.
3-month size here.
This is a thicker texture that I've seen a lot on Etsy. It is simple, though it would not be a good project for beginners.
Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (I used I Love This Cotton)
5mm (H/8) hook
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Dc - double crochet
St - stitch
Sl st - slip stitch
Crossed dc in same st - make a double crochet, then insert hook in same space, but behind just-completed dc and make another dc.
Crossed dc - skip one dc, dc in next dc. Then dc in the skipped dc.
St - stitch
Technique for starting each round -
Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc in stitch behind. Then continue forward as usual with the crossed dcs. That will count as a pair of crossed dc. You will move back a stitch each time, but because you can't see the seam, it won't matter.
To make it easier to find the top ch of the ch 3 for the join, put a stitch marker in it.
Tip for ending each round - (If you don't use a stitch maker) It can be hard to find the top ch of the ch 3 at the end of the round, so look for that "behind" dc in the first pair, follow it up to its "insert hook" spot, then go one st back and there's your ch.
Instructions: (read tips in bold before beginning!)
Round 1: Magic ring, 6 pairs crossed dc. (12 dc) Sl st to top ch in ch 3.
Round 2: In each dc, crossed dc in same st. (24 dc) Sl st to top ch in ch 3.
Round 3: *In next two st, crossed dc in same st. In next pair, crossed dc. Repeat from * five times. (36 dc) Sl st to top ch in ch 3.
Round 4: *In next two st, crossed dc in same st. In next two pairs, crossed dc. Repeat from * five times. (48 dc) Sl st to top ch in ch 3.
Round 5-12: Crossed dc around. (48 dc) Sl st to top ch in ch 3. Finish off, weave in ends.
For the embellishment, I used this adorable butterfly pattern from Little Birdie Secrets. I used the "large" size, with worsted weight acrylic yarn and a size 5mm hook.

Thanks for the pattern..this is really cute!
ReplyDeleteFor the crossed DC in the same stitch, when you say to "insert hook in same space, but behind just-completed dc" do you mean to work from the back side of the stitch? I'm having a really hard time figuring it out.
ReplyDeleteThink about where you usually put the hook when working a second dc in the same space. Instead of putting it there, move the first dc over and put the hook on the other side.
ReplyDeleteOH. Duh. It was too simple for me---I was trying to make it complicated LOL! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteim having a hard time starting the circle.. am i dc-ing in same stitch? if not .. idk what to do lol
ReplyDeleteam i DCing around the first dc? or just behind it? bah - this is a very nice hat lol i hope can get it! :D
ReplyDeleteClick on the words "magic ring" and they will take you to a tutorial with lots of pictures.
ReplyDeletethe magic circle i get, it was the first stitching that i didnt understand.. if i didnt get it - i got close enough tho! lol thank you
ReplyDeleteso do you make 10 double crochets in magic ring to begin then start your crossed double crochets in those? I am a little confused
ReplyDeleteI crossed the dcs in the magic ring.
ReplyDeletehow did you do that? I cannot cross them...am I doing something wrong? is it possible to show a tutorial of it? so confused by this part
ReplyDeleteMade 2of them! Loved it!! I probably messed it up a few times, but I was camping and couldn't look up any tutorials. Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to know if the amount of stitches are still the same if I use a larger hook? Size J or K for instance?
ReplyDeleteIf you use a larger hook, it will be a larger hat. I've never tried it with a larger hook, so I can't tell you how much bigger.
ReplyDeleteI updated this pattern. The math was off - hopefully it should work much better as written now! Let me know if you have any problems. :)
