Worsted weight (Cotton) yarn (I Love This Cotton by Hobby Lobby)
5mm (H/8) hook
Button
Opt. tapestry needle for sewing button and weaving ends
Abbreviations:
Ch: chain
Dc: double crochet
Fpdc: front post double crochet
Bpdc: back post double crochet
Round 1: Magic Ring, ch 3. In ring, 10 dc. Pull ring tight. Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 2: Ch 3. 2 dc in each dc around. (20 dc) Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 3: Ch 3. *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, repeat from * around. (30 dc) Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 4: Ch 3. *2 dc in nxt dc, dc in next 5 dc. Repeat from * around. (35 dc) Join to top ch of ch 3.
Round 5: Ch 3. Dc around. Join to top ch of ch 3.
Row 6: Ch 8. Dc in 3rd ch from hook. Dc in the next 5 chs. Dc in each dc around. (This will be in the opposite direction than the direction you've been going. Do not join.
Row 7: Ch 2, turn. *Fpdc in next dc, Bpdc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Do not join.
Row 8: Ch 2, turn. *Bpdc in next dc, Fpdc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Do not join.
Row 9: Ch 2, turn. *Fpdc in next dc, Bpdc in next dc. Repeat from * around. Do not join. Finish off. Weave in ends. Use space between 2nd and 3rd dcs in flap as button hole, sew button underneath.

ReplyDeletedo not understand from r7 on... how does this become a hat if it is not connected after doing the button flap... i have tried this pattern 10 times trying to figure it out and it is a non connected hat! HELP!!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right, it's not connected from Round 7 on. You will attach the flap to the other side of the brim with the button. You sew the button to the base of the brim beneath the flap, then button the flap to the other side of the hat, thus connecting it.
ReplyDeleteI've read your response to Anonymous and continue to have trouble. The button flap is part of row 6, right? In the photo it appears to me to be part of the final row. As a result, rows 7, 8 and 9 are a wide open gap. I love the concept of the flap and button but am having such difficulty. Is there any guidance you can give me? I'm sorry to be so challenged with this pattern!

I have trouble with the flap too. I've tried the pattern 3x. I think it's cute but mine looks off. is there only one row of dc for the flap? I wish you would do a tutorial for the row that starts the flap to the ending of the pattetn.

ReplyDeleteIf you see, Row 6 starts with "Ch 8." That's where you start the flap.
DeleteThank you for your quick response! I guess I understand that part. But when you continue after Row 6 and making the flap, you still have 3 more rows to go which puts the flap in the middle of the hat. I must be misunderstanding something though, because that's not how your picture looks. :)
ReplyDeleteWhen you reach row 6, you stop joining the circle. Just keep going with the pattern and it should become clear!
DeleteI went into the bigger sizes and read how someone solved the "flap" problem. She said "when you start the fpdc INCLUDE the flap." I did that and it worked! The "flap" is now the same width and doesn't look weird.
