Supplies:
Small ball Vanna's Choice yarn (or other heavy worsted weight), small amount in second color.
6mm (J/10) hook
Yarn needle
Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Sl st - slip stitch
Dc - double crochet
Sc - single crochet
Special Stitch:
Cluster - In space indicated, sl st, ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st.
Instructions:
Round 1: Magic Ring. Ch 5, sl st. *Ch 2, dc, ch 2, sl st. Repeat from *4 times. Ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of original ch 5. Pull ring tight, but not closed.
Round 2: *ch 4, sc on dc. Repeat from * 4 times. Ch 4, sc in top of petal from last row. Sl st to first ch.
Round 3: In ch-4 space, *2 sc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, 2sc. Ch 1. Repeat from * in each ch-4 space. Sl st in first sc.
Round 4: Ch 5, sc in first dc. *Ch 2, dc in ch-1 space (over petal-tip), ch 2, sc in dc. Repeat from * 4 times. Sl st in third ch from ch 5.
Round 5: *Work a cluster in ch-2 space. Ch 1. Repeat from * around. Sl st to first sl st.
Round 6: Ch 4, sl st in dc. *Ch 2, sl st in dc. Repeat from * around. After the last dc, ch 1, sl st to 3rd ch of initial ch 4.
Round 7: Ch 5, sl st in first ch-2 sp. Ch1. * Work a cluster in ch -2 space. Ch 1. Repeat from * around. Sl st in last ch-1 sp, ch 2, sl st in 3rd ch of original ch 5.
Round 8: *Ch 2, sl st in dc. Repeat from * around (end in the first dc).
Rounds 9 – 11: Repeat Rounds 5-7. Finish off, weave in ends.
Stitch Diagram:
Flower:
Round 1: Magic Ring. *Ch 3, sl st. Repeat from * 5 times. Tighten ring but leave a dime-sized opening.
Round 2: In each ch-3 space, sl st, ch 2, 2dc, ch 2, sl st. Finish off with a long end for sewing.
Round 3: With another color, attach yarn with a sl st to Magic Ring underneath a ch-3 space. Ch 3, sl st underneath next ch-3 space. Repeat around.
Round 4: In each newly-created ch-3 space, sl st, ch 3, 3 treble crochet, ch 3, sl st.
Finish off, weave in ends, except for one of the hat color. Sew flower to hat. Weave in end.

ReplyDeleteI had problems getting this pattern to work....it took me 5 or 6 times, I finally played around with it enough to make it work...still not really sure what I changed. I like the hat though, I'm going to give it another try and write down what I change. The flower instructions were a little confusing too, but I think I was just too tired so I am going to try that again as well.

ReplyDeleteI just finished this hat and it did turn out great. What I did was to slip stitch at the end of each round into the first slip stitch and slip stitch my way up(through the begining chain three or what number it is) to the first chain one or chain two space to begin next round (hope you can follow what I am trying to say)....I do not have a seam and it worked out great for me.

ReplyDeleteInside the magic ring, you create the main flower. So, you first make half of the first petal, then you make four complete petals, then you make the last half of the first petal. So that you can get to the next round without a seam.

ReplyDeleteI really love this hat but am struggling trying to figure it out. How many stitches do you make in the magic ring? On round 4, what chain 1 space are you talking about? Aren't there 2 chain 1 spaces per flower at that point? Is there anyway you could simplify this pattern for dummies like me?

Ok, folks, I started on the stitch diagram and found some errors in the pattern in the process. I sincerely apologize - I usually stick to simple patterns because I am not good at math!
ReplyDeleteI updated the Round 4 instructions, and I am working on a clear stitch diagram with colors for each round. My pencil sketch is not going to help anyone - it looks like a pretty star. :) Again, I'm really sorry for those of you who are frustrated.
This hat is so cute. However, I just spent time working on it and it has turned out to look like the picture....except it is so small. It is way too small for a newborn. It looks like a minature hat for a doll!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to hear that it worked for you! Check the weight of your yarn... the yarn I used is technically worsted (I think?) but it is somewhat heavier. If you are using a smaller worsted or a baby/sport weight, maybe try working it with two strands together, and/or with a larger hook. Hopefully that will yield a bigger hat. The finished dimensions should be about 12" in circumference and about 5" from top to bottom.

DeleteThis is the updated pattern. This is a hard pattern... maybe start with an easier one that has a stitch diagram, and get comfortable with using them, then try it again? Sorry you're finding it so difficult!

ReplyDeleteIf you chain 3 or 4 instead of chain 2 in the base of the hat, and do an extra dc in the grouping, maybe that would make it bigger? I'd say, play around with it, and let us all know what you end up with!!

ReplyDeleteI love this hat. I have now made 2 of them. The first one came out a little small, but would still fit a newborn. The second one I actually made today for a friend's baby who is almost 3 months. She loved this hat and I decided I would find a way to make it big enough for her little girl. I see a few people have asked about making it bigger too. Starting on round 6 in place of the ch 2 I did ch 4. I did this throughout the rest of the hat and it worked pretty well. If anyone wants to make their hat bigger this would be a good option. Thought I would share :)

You say ch5, sc in 1st dc,*ch2, dc in ch-1 sp, ch2, sc in dc. If I'm reading this correctly, you're asking me to back track. What other dc do I work in since there's only 1 dc in each ch-4 space. Thanks for your help. I love your hats.
ReplyDeleteIn Round 3, you make ch-1 spaces over the Round-2-scs. So, in Round 4 you are making petals, chaining 2 and anchoring the petals with a dc in the spaces over the Round 2 scs. Then in the dcs from Round 3 you make a sc. When I say to make a stitch in a space, you are not making it in a stitch. You are putting your hook through the hole.
ReplyDeleteBTW, if you want, you can make ch-3 spaces instead of ch-2 spaces in the Round 4 rounds for the rest of the hat; it will be a little stretchier.

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this cute pattern. I also had to make modifications to the pattern because I found the directions confusing. The diagram did help a little with clearification. The hat turned out way too small for a newborn at 9.5 inches using Caron Simply Soft which works up losely. From experience the average newborn beanie should be around 12 inches. It is super cute so I might play with it to see if I can make it bigger. I appreciate your creativity and willingness to share!
