Free Pattern: No-sew Rose

The prevailing method for making a crochet rose is to make a scalloped strip, roll it up, and sew it shut.  I just couldn't get mine to roll up the way I wanted, and I was really dreading sewing it all shut at the bottom, so I worked out this rose pattern - it's flat on the bottom, which makes it more streamlined for embellishing hats, and the petals will always line up the same way.  Which could be a strength or a weakness, depending on how you look at it.  :)

I made this rose in a larger size here.

Supplies:
Worsted weight yarn (Pictured is I Love This Cotton)
Appropriate size hook (Used 4.25mm)
Tapestry Needle (for minimal sewing)

Abbreviations:
Ch - chain
Sc - single crochet
Dc - double crochet
Sl st - slip stitch

Instructions:
Instructions are for closed rose.  Changes for open rose are in parentheses.
Round 1: Magic ring, inside ring ch 1, 9 sc.  Pull ring tight, join with sl st to ch.
Round 2: Ch 3.  2 dc in back loops (front loops) only in each sc around.  (18 dc)  Join to top ch of ch 3.
Rose Spiral: ch 1.  (turn so wrong side is facing.  The back of your work will be facing you the whole time.)  *In front loop of second dc from hook, 6 dc.  Skip one dc, sl st in front loop of next dc.  Repeat from * 3 times.

Now you will move to the next "round."  In front loop of second dc from hook, which should be the last dc, 6 dc.   Skipping one dc, sl st in the post of the next dc.

*Skip one dc post, 6 dc in post of next dc.  Skip one dc post, sl st in post of next dc.  Repeat from * one time.   Skip one dc post, 6 dc in post of next dc.

You should be ready to move to the next "round," the exposed loops of the original scs.  Sl st in first loop.

*Skip one loop, 4 dc in next loop.  Skip one loop, sl st in next loop.  Repeat from * one time.  If you have the space--in one test rose I did, in one I did not.  Don't know how that happened, but they both turned out nice--repeat a second time.  You do not have to have the space to sl st for the last petal.  Finish off with a long tail for sewing.

Thread tapestry needle through tail on end, insert through center of rose.  Pull tight enough to make the last petal curl in nicely.  Weave in so it doesn't move.

  1. Genius! I found you through Fave Crafts. I am an avid/beginner crocheter. I love it. Happy hookin is good for the soul! I WILL BE BACK!

  2. This is awesome! I love the look of sprial roses; but despite being an experienced crocheter I, too, hated sewing them shut. They always ended up looking bad. I can't thank you enough for sharing your pattern!

  4. thanks so much for this cute flower!! i'm fairly new to crocheting and may be reading the pattern wrong, but after Row 2 it appears that i should have 18 dc's, yet when working the rose spiral right afterward it seems there might be something missing. in every other stitch we're instructed to work 6 dc's, but only do this sequence a total of 4 times. so these instructions tell me what to do with the first 8 stitches from previous Rnd 2, but what about the remaining 8 stitches?? thanks, Alli! (from Dee ... i don't have a url address and don't want to just post as anonymous)

  5. Not in every other stitch. Work in the second dc from the hook, then skip one and sl st in the next. So it should be every 4th st.

  7. Thank you so much for this pattern! I made the newborn cluster hat in bright pink and put a black rose on it for my soon-to-be-born daughter. It's adorably goth/chic! :) I've also made her the legwarmers, earflap hat, and deeply textured hat. I'm going to try the petals hat tonight! She is going to be one stylin' baby, thanks mostly to your patterns!

  9. I also dread sewing my roses, so this was an amazing find! My only problem is I can't figure out how to do the open rose. Every time I try, my rose ends up closed! It's still pretty and I'm so happy to have found this, but please help me with the open rose! Thanks!

  10. Charlee, I actually tried to do the open one the other day and it ended up closed. haha. According to my instructions, you work it with the wrong side facing the whole time, so it would be awkward. Anybody else get the open rose made? Tips?

    1. I actually just figured it out today! I just worked the entire thing backwards, if that makes sense... I held it with the wrong side facing me then folded over the petals as I worked the inside of the rose. Hopefully that helps (or at least makes sense)!

  11. Alli, I made this rose for the newborn hat pattern also from your site. They both went together perfectly. It was so easy to make and looks stunning. The newborn hat looks gorgeous and I totally love it. I am a bit unsure if it is a little too small for newborns. I really cant remember how small my newborns head was. Thanks a lot for this pattern and I am sure i will be making lots more

    1. I know this is awfully late but thought I'd respond for others who might find it useful. An average newborn baby's head is roughly the size of a grapefruit hope this helps :)

  12. Hi
In the second round of the spiral, where do we start? I can't really tell in the pic.

  13. I love this little flower. I will definitely be making this for a gray, white and black pillow I made. I think I'll make it in a dark red to give it a little spark. What do you think?

By the way I love your website! Whenever I have a little project I want to make I check your website to see if you have any insperation for me. You have virtually all the hat patterns I could wish for plus more! Life is to short :) At least it is preparation for something much better to come. Yes even better than cricheting ;) I L-O-V-E to crochet! But as the bible says we mustn't let ANYTHING come before Lovering God.
Thanks so much for this pattern!!!

  14. I love this "no sew" technique! I am wanting to make a flower just like this only with 2 colors. I have found a pattern that use one color for the shells & a second color for a boarder working over the back posts....but you have to sew it together & I can never get it to look nice. Is there any way to do this pattern with a second color??? Thanks so much for posting!!! I love this site!!
