  3. This is just what I've been looking for! I just started making baby hats for our local hospital. I've found all kinds of adorable patterns for girl's hats, but haven't found anything that I really liked for little boys.
I can't wait to make it! So much for getting my laundry done tonight :)

  5. Precious! Thanks for posting something for a boy--I'm having a awful time finding cute but easy projects for boys. I wonder if I could find a rocket ship button to put on it? :) :)

  6. This a is such a cute hat! I am confused about round 7. I ch 9 then dc in 4th chain from hook, then dc in next 5 ch. Then it says to dc in each dc around, am I supposed to switch directions? I am new to crocheting so I need some help!! THanks!

  7. Hey Anonymous, that round is the one where you start the flap. So you need to add some length (the chains) then build on the chains. Then you continue with the rest of the round on the dcs. If you look at the picture on the bottom right, you can see that first row of the flap, which is the part you are stuck on. Maybe that will help...

  11. Im stuck on the flap :( Round 7 just like anonymous. I have no idea what it's trying to tell me to do

  12. Nellie, can you be more specific? You make the flap by chaining, then double crocheting in the chains, then you start double crocheting around the hat. It makes sense to me, so I can't help you unless you explain how it doesn't make sense to you. :)

  13. Figured it out! I ch'd 8 instead of 9 and couldn't figure out what was wrong. Durrr. Count your work!

  14. The part that i wasn't sure about too was the 'dc in each dc around.' I kept wondering if it was around the flap or around the hat. I figured around the hat made more sense :)

  15. Hey Alli, I am now stuck on row 8. When I get to the flap, so I keep the fpdc and bpdc on the flap? or behind it, or do I stop when I get there? I keep doing it both ways I can't figure out what looks right. These patterns are so darned cute!!!!

  16. Lori,
Keep doing the post stitches all the way to the end of the flap, then turn and keep the texture going. It will look right when you get a little further along.
    All the best,
    Alli

  17. I would love to make this in an adult size, do you have a pattern for that? Also some of your other hats in adult size, thanks.

  20. Regarding your button flap beanie Have you made it for an older child. My granddaughter is 18 mos.

I see you used a H hook. Would I just double everything. Kinda new at crocheting, just love the hat

  21. Hi Alli. so I tried making this hat last night and I got a little stuck on the flap part. for some reason when I made the flap it was very narrow...so when I finish the last three rows it didn't match up. I had extra length on the hat with a slit that wasn't covered by my flap. Is that just because I crochet too tight or do you think I might have done something wrong with the flap?

    1. I have the exact problem. It's as cute as can be but it seems I have an extra row? I'm a little confused. Love your patterns!!

  22. Hi Alli! I just wanted to thank you so much for all your patterns that you have been so nice enough to share with everyone! I spend many hours surfing different crochet blogs and i always find myself coming back to yours. It really has been my go to when I am looking for a nice hat pattern! They are easy to follow and always turn out so nice! Thanks so much again,I can wait to see what you come up with next! Lisa

  23. I just finished this hat. So cute! I had a hard time finding a hat for a little boy, just as the pp mentioned. I also had to pause at row 7. It was the 'opposite direction' that tripped me up. I interpreted it as needing to turn so my stiches were in the opposite direction. Really I should have continued on going around the hat as I had in previous rounds. Because I turned, the flap on the other side of the hat than what is shown in the pictures. Doesn't take away from how adorable the hat is. Thank you for the pattern!

  24. Hi Alli,

I made this adorable little hat...and I was just fine with the pattern until I got to the end and had this opening on the same side as the flap from where I didn't join the circle, starting with Row 7. What am I supposed to do to finish it/close the hole? Or, what do you think I did wrong to encounter that hole in the first place?

Thanks for all of the WONDERFUL patterns you've shared!

    ReplyDelete
  25. The "hole" where you don't join should be the place where the flap overlaps. So when you button the flap together, the two sides that you didn't join overlap each other to form the flap. Does that help?

  26. I think that I may have counted the rows incorrectly and started the flap a row too soon. Thanks so much for your prompt response!

  27. Hello, Alli!
I´ve crocheted this cute beannie and I love the results!
I had the same "problem" above with the flap, but I guess it can´t be seen in the finished beannie...
My blog and the beannie photos are here: http://linhasimaginarias.blogspot.com.br/2012/08/casaquinhos-afins.html
    Thanks a lot for sharing!
    Best regards, from Brazil

  28. Hi, Alli
I just tryed this and it did not turn out right. It looks like a wide bowl.
    Please help!!!

  29. I love the color of blue that you used on the hat pictured above. Do you remember what it is called? On the Hobby Lobby website of I Love Cotton yarn it looks like it could be Summer Sparkle or Stonewash.

    1. They actually discontinued this one, I think. Stonewash is a little lighter, but it's probably the closest.

  31. I wish you would do a tutorial on this hat. It's so cute but I cannot get the flap portion down. It looks great other than the opening and flap area.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had trouble with the flap portion too. Here's the key. When you start the fpdc INCLUDE the flap. That was the problem for me!!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Thank You for this bit of advice!!!! I made the hat and did not include the FLAP after Row 7 and had "extra" rows and was wondering like the other 2 people what had I done wrong. I came back here and read the comments and seen yours where it said INCLUDE the Flap, I ripped back and now it looks like it should!!! Thank You!!!

  33. I hve a question. I am teaching myself so I dont know how to read patterns very well. The very first thing is to do a magic ring then it says 10 dc in ring then pull. I did this and it came out weird. Do I have to pull and close and then 10 dc?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You will need to do the 10 dc inside the ring before you pull it closed. Then after you pull it tight you will be able to join.

  34. Alli, Im afraid that the flap it has been the challenge for most of us...please can you clarify if we continue with the hat..and close the flap???

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm having the same problem as everyone else. The flap appears to small and too high on the hat, and the open space below is to wide. Other than that I really love the hat! Please clarify--what are we doing wrong with the flap?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Has there been any updates on the clarification of this pattern? I'm having a similar problem to everyone else with the flap. Right now my hat looks like it has a narrow tail between a fairly wide gap in the fpdc and bpdc rows... I can see the potential in the hat, if only I knew how to make it work... Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  37. I am a bit confused by the flap myself....do you do the FPDC and and BPDC on the flap too?

    ReplyDelete
  38. if i wanted to make this for like a child (age 5) do i use a bigger hook n more stitches or just keep adding rounds to the desired length of the child n add flaps thanks

    1. Keep adding rows (you can use my earflap beanie as a guide) and do the last few rows as a flap like in this pattern.
